Posted in SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on December 31st, 2006 at 9:37 pm

2007conclave.pngI’ve been asked to pass along to readers of this blog that ordering information for conclave memorabilia and other information about the 2007 SR-7B conclave can now be found online.

Memorabilia sales is a major source of funding the SR-7B conclaves.  Occoneechee lodge has been working hard to make this the best conclave ever.

RIP: Eagle Scout Gerald R. Ford, Jr.

Posted in Current Events by John E. Pannell on December 31st, 2006 at 12:19 am

5presidents1.jpgVice President Cheney gave a wonderful eulogy for President Ford earlier this evening.

While very few believe that Ford was one of our great presidents, he was what the country needed at that time.   He was an unassuming and honest man who could help heal the divided and embittered nation.   He was also an Eagle Scout. Continue Reading »

Over the next few weeks, I will be posting a year end round of of lodge events issues for this past year. For some lodges I have no information, so unless someone tells me what event patches their lodge has made this past year the update will be very short.

Consider this a not so subtle hint and request: If your lodge events issues are not yet on OAImages.com, please send the information and scans along to me. Continue Reading »

After a brief diversion for a few vanity and Christmas themed posts, I return to my year end summary of the OA lodge events issues from the Carolinas.

Over the next few weeks, I will be posting a year end round of of lodge events issues for this past year. For some lodges I have no information, so unless someone tells me what event patches their lodge has made this past year the update will be very short.

UNC 87 — Rutgers 48

Posted in Tarheel Basketball by John E. Pannell on December 28th, 2006 at 10:07 pm

heaven.jpgI got to make an impromptu trip to Chapel Hill this evening to catch my second UNC basketball game of the year.

In spite of what I thought was a rocky start, where it seemed several players had too much Christmas turkey and eggnog over the weekend, they handily defeated Rutgers and improved their record to 11-1.

President Ford Dies

Posted in Current Events by John E. Pannell on December 27th, 2006 at 3:04 pm

ford-scouting.jpgMost everyone has heard by now that President Gerald R. Ford died on the evening of December 26, 2006.   He was the first and, for the foreseeable future, only American president to have earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Many tributes have been written already.   Many more will be written.   So far, I seen only one from the point of view of his being a Scout.   Please read Pastor Bob McCanless’ tribute to President Ford, a far better post than I could ever write.

Learning the Lessons of History?

“Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

Here’s another holiday time fluff post…

I’m not a huge fan of YouTube.  There’s just so much garbage there one has to wade through before on finds anything worth watching.    However, someone else put me on to this video.

Do we really learn the lessons of history?

Merry Christmas

Posted in Personal Stuff by John E. Pannell on December 23rd, 2006 at 5:14 pm

Gov. Mike Easley of North Carolina has temporarily lifted the ban on flying reindeer:

Easley said he has temporarily lifted the importation ban on reindeer coming into the state and asked the Federal Aviation Administration to keep the skies over North Carolina clear on Christmas Eve.

“My contacts at the North Pole tell me that Santa has lots of presents for good little boys and girls of North Carolina this year,” said Easley. “I am taking these actions so that Santa will have a clear path from Manteo to Murphy as he delivers presents.”

See the rest of the story at http://news.yahoo.com/s/wxii/20061222/lo_wxii/10592899.

Yep… it’s a completely silly story, but still mildly amusing.   Folks from North Carolina will understand the phrase “From Manteo to Murphy”.  It’s reference to the 543 mile long trip across North Carolina on US Highway 64 from Manteo in the east to Murphy in the west.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

UNC 105 — Florida Atlantic 52

Posted in Tarheel Basketball by John E. Pannell on December 20th, 2006 at 3:13 am

I made my annual pilgrimage to the Dean Dome last night to see UNC’s men’s basketball team humiliate the team from Florida Atlantic University.   Clearly, FAU was outclassed by the far superior Tarheels.
