Lodge Name Confusion

Eric Hatcher posted on patch-l how he was compiling a list of lodge names that he has confused in the past.   Using this site, he discovered something odd involving Tejas 72 and Tonkawa 99.

He writes:

Oaimages.com lists the following:

72 Tejas:

  • belongs to East Texas Council (585) in Tyler TX
  • chartered 1934;
  • changed name from Tonkawa “back to” Tejas 1938;

99 Tonkawa:

  • belongs to Capital Area Council (564) in Austin TX;
  • chartered 1937 as Te Jas;
  • changed name to Tonkawa 1938

Am I right in picturing the following timeline:

  • 1934 Tejas 72 is chartered
  • 1935/6 Tejas 72 becomes Tonkawa 72
  • 1937 Te Jas 99 is chartered
  • 1938 Tonkawa 72 becomes Tejas 72
  • (1938) Te Jas 99 becomes Tonkawa 99

And if so, can anyone explain why the two lodges seem to swap names?

Are there any folks from these lodges, or OA historians, who can answer his question.   Why did these lodges apparently swap names in 1938?   What was going on between these two lodges in the 1930s?

    GREAT stuff here! Bounce it off Bruce Shelly - he seems to be somewhat of an expert on Lodge names - he might have a line on this. As many serious collectors as their are in TX (Tracy Mesler, John Conley-Williams, Irv Block, et.al.), maybeone of them knows, too!
