OAImages Site Outage
As you may have noticed, and several follks told me (thanks!), OAImages was offline for several hours earlier this morning.
Several THOUSAND files were deleted from the site’s server, most probably between about 0700 and 1015. These included all the webpages from the public portion of the site and the various files and directories that contained the data for the various counters used on the site, and uploaded images in this blog. The actual scripts behind the site, the images directories, the members area, and any members’ inventory data all appear to have been unaffected.
The site has been restored and is now back online. Ufortunately all the various counters have been reset as I did not maintain any current backups of that data. I still have yet to replace images in this blog, so please excuse any bad image links you may see.
I am investigating the cause of this problem. The most likely causes would appear to be hardware failure or unauthorized access to the server. So far, I have found no evidence of either.
On a positive note… This site will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2007. This was not how I wanted to start the year! In honor of that ocassion, I have created a new banner that will be used on a rotating basis with the familiar OAImages banner. I think you will like it.
All the patches in the new banner have something in common. Do you know what it is?

I’m seeing a familiar-looking banner–not sure if it’s the new one or the old one–with patches showing the family tree of Tsoiotsi Tsogalii (and I spelled that RIGHT before I checked it…)
Dave
Dave –
That’s the older banner. If you hit the site again, you might see the new one. It’s randomly decided which banner appears.
In MSIE, you can see the new banner if you reload a couple of times until it appears. I’m told that doesn’t work with Firefox.
Later tonight, the new banner will be put into the rotation on the lodge pages, too, giving folks a greater chance of seeing it.
John
John,
Sorry to hear about your server issues. I guess for the next few hours my counter stats will be higher than yours. Of course next week you’ll be tens of thousands higher than me again.
Bill
I must say that I am particularly impressed with the flap that is second from the right.
However, it could be argued that I am a trifle biased

Ah, now I’ve seen the 10th anniversary banner.
When you get to 75 years, I can help you find some good images for that!
