Lodge 116: The Last 2006 NOAC Flap?

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Santee 116 by John E. Pannell on March 26th, 2007 at 1:00 am

Just when you thought there would be no more patches issued for last Summer’s NOAC, along comes Santee 116 with their first ever NOAC flap.   Thanks to Jason Spangler for the information and scan.

Jason reports this flap didn’t arrive until after NOAC.  The lodge had these and wanted to release them at the 2006 Fall Fellowship, but they could not decide how to distribute them.  Once a decision was made, the lodge released these at their banquet in January 2007.

Though this is clearly a flap-shaped patch and initially designed to be worn as a flap, the lodge decided to attach a pocket loop it.   That way it could be worn as a pocket “dangle”.  In spite of this loop, I believe this piece should be listed as a flap.

This Blue Book information for this patch is as follows:

Issue Bdr Color/Type Bkgd Name fdl/BSA Comments
S23? RED R M/C RED GRY fdl; 2006 NOAC, with loop, issued January 2007

"Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things."
"I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was younger, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

In my opinion, if it has a pocket loop, it is not designed to be worn on the flap but to be hung from the pocket, therefore, not really a pocket flap patch. This is why I also consider the Wahissa BB issue s12 not valid as it also was issued with a pocket loop. I have had many conversations regarding the Wahissa piece, I don’t think the editors of BB should declare an obvious pocket hanging patch as noted by the pocket loop, a flap when clearly the lodge issuing the piece designed and issued it to be hung. Perhaps creating a definition of just what may cause one to call a flap a flap would help, otherwise, there are many x’s and some flap designated patches that could be reclassified. Just my thoughts!

[...] A while back I wrote about the NOAC flap issued by Santee 116, opining that it was probably the last lodge issue for last Summer’s NOAC. I was wrong. John Kasper just sent me this image of a flap issued by Ahoalan Nachpikin 558.  It commemorates the 2006 NOAC and the national Grass Dance champion, a member of their lodge. [...]
