New SR-7B Memorabilia Trading Policy

Posted in SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on April 30th, 2007 at 12:57 am

This letter, printed in its entirety below, from the Section adviser was a result of a meeting between him and some concerned collectors, and input from the section’s Council of Chiefs.  It was distributed as part of the Sunday morning newsletter at the SR-7B conclave

As I was only at the conclave on Saturday, I did not know of this letter until Sunday, April 29th.

Tracking Blogs

Posted in Scouting Blogs and Websites by John E. Pannell on April 29th, 2007 at 1:47 am

Those who keep their own blogs should make themselves aware of Technorati.    The site tracks millions of blogs and their popularity, measured by other blogs linking to it.  Most Scouting and patch collecting blogs have a small readership base, especially when compared to some of the more popular blogs tracked at this site.

For those who may care, my Technorati profile can be viewed online.

Category IconLodge 104: STILL More Conclave Patches

Posted in Occoneechee 104, SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on April 28th, 2007 at 6:44 am

There are four more patches from Occoneechee lodge for the recent SR-7B conclave that have not yet been reported here. I have alluded to two of them.

In addition to the trading post staff patch (X33?) two more conclave committees had officially approved staff patches. They were for the campsite hosts, and cook crew.

In addiition there was a patch used by the medical service staff. This was not authorized by the lodge and should be listed as a “Z”, at best. Continue Reading »

Very Late NOAC Flaps, Part 3

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on April 27th, 2007 at 2:04 am

Here’s another very late flap, issued by Semialachee 239, for events related to last Summer’s NOAC.   I guess issuing a flap for an event more than six months after the event ended is not as unusual as I had thought!

This was probably issued before the Ahoalan Nachpikin 558 flap I previously wrote about.

Northeast Region Patch Site Updated

Posted in Scouting Blogs and Websites by John E. Pannell on April 27th, 2007 at 12:08 am

oar1.jpgDavid Scocca has recently updated his Northeast Region patches webpages after his site was highlighted in a post on Bill Mulrenin’s New York OA Trader blog.

This is an excellent resource for those who collect patches of the Northeast region.   This material is beyond the scope of this website, the Blue Book and other catalogues so it is good to see a current online resource for this.   Thanks, Dave.

Do you know of a similar website for other regions?  If so, please let me know and it may be highlighted on this blog.

Category IconLodge 296: 2007 SR-7B Conclave Flap

Posted in Nayawin Rar 296, SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on April 26th, 2007 at 3:31 am

This is the smallest lodge in our section yet they consistently bring about half their membership to the section conclave each year. Imagine if all lodges were as active.

Nayawin Rar adopted a Star Wars theme for their conclave delegation. Like Klahican and Tsoiotsi Tsogalii, their flap uses a minimal number of colors.

Brandan Wright to Enter the NBA Draft

Posted in Tarheel Basketball by John E. Pannell on April 26th, 2007 at 1:26 am

UNC’s star freshman, Brandan Wright, has announced he will enter the NBA draft.  Yes, he was the ACC’s rookie of the year but in my opinion this is a mistake.  He should stay at UNC at least one more year.  He has not yet retained an agent, leaving open the possibility of returning next year.

I only hope he doesn’t end up in the type of trouble that dogged Joseph Forte after he left UNC.

Tyler Hansbrough will be returning for his junior year.

Chiefly Patches, Part 2: Lodge of the National Vice Chief

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on April 26th, 2007 at 1:01 am

This is the second of a series of posts on patches issued for the various national officers in the Order of the Arrow.  Previously I had written about “Lodge of the National Chief” patches.  Next up are patches for the “Lodge of the National Vice Chief”.

Category IconLodge 104: Conclave Delegate Flap Variety?

Posted in Occoneechee 104, SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on April 25th, 2007 at 4:20 am

Occoneechee lodge had to place a second order for the 2007 SR-7B Conclave delegate flap. It was pointed out at the Conclave that the patches from each order are distinctly different. It was argued these should be listed as separate varieties.

Greg Grimes was not easily persuaded and provided a scan of both with an an explanation of the differences. Take a look at the scan and tell us what you think.

“Whatzit” Solved

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on April 25th, 2007 at 12:11 am

999mcfaddenIf you haven’t already seen this, check out the “Whatzit” page on the site.

The patch pictured here was a rather interesting one.

The Silver Beaver is flanked by Scouter’s Training Award and Scoutmaster’s Key, above which are what appears to be Boy Scout and Cub Scout service stars.   Between the ribbon is written “WWW”, leading to the possibility this could be some sort of OA issue.

Greg Pioppi, of the Minsi Trails Council, was able to solve this puzzle.   He writes:

I’ll avoid showing my age and leave the “obvious” reference to 1980s music to the readers to figure out.

Camp Bowers is undergoing extensive renovations and has been closed since the end of last Summer. So, the lodge adopted an “Under Construction” theme for this year’s SR-7B conclave.
