Lodge 70: 1995 EC Flap Resurfaces

Lodge 70 EC FlapIt’s been a while since one of these has surfaced, just long enough for most brothers and collectors of this lodge’s material to have forgotten about this oddball flap.   Many doubted its existence  so it was never listed in  Blue Book.

1995 was both a difficult and momentous  year for Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge.

The lodge officially came into being the previous Fall at Camp Wenasa, with an impressive ceremony involving the merging of flames from Tsalagi and Keyauwee lodges.   Shortly afterwards that camp was closed and its structures demolished to make way for new homes.     As with any merger things were difficult as disagreements arose over how the lodge was to be run.

The lodge was amazed at how quickly their first flap sold at the 1995 SR-7 conclave.   By Saturday afternoon enough patches were sold for every brother in attendance to have three of them!   Some on the Executive Committee (EC) were upset at how quickly the new lodge’s first flap had become almost as common as toilet paper.

To honor their service during the lodge’s first full year, it was decided to create a special flap for the EC members and their advisers.   The flap was to have no wording to indicate its purpose.   Only the green border would indicate it was something special.   The flap was issued one per brother.   It is said all the extras were destroyed, though rumors have it that one of the lodge officers  kept several extras for himself.

Since  several big patch collectors in the lodge were not on the EC, it was decided amongst the group that the existence of this piece be kept quiet.   They wanted neither to ruffle the feathers of  these folks in the lodge, nor be hounded by wealthy patch collectors waving hundred dollar bills in an attempt to get this piece.

Incredibly, that silence was largely maintained… until now.

The Blue Book listing for this flap should read as follows:

Issue Bdr Color/Type Bkgd Name fdl/BSA Comments
S2.5? GRN R M/C BLK YEL fdl; S1 design, issued to 1995 EC members

I guess the officers that year wanted to make future lodge 70 collectors green with envy! :)
Thanks to the internet and its ability to display an image of anything, this rare flap is pictured here. To my knowledge this is the first time an image of this piece has ever appeared online or in print.
