Kevin Doyle recently made me aware of this eBay seller.   In his words:

See you don’t have to get your patches approved by BSA or use a BSA -certified manufacturer…

"Mathematics has beauties of its own -- a symmetry and proportion in its results, a lack of superfluity, an exact adaptation of means to ends, which is exceedingly remarkable and to be found only in the works of the greatest beauty When this subject is properly ... presented, the mental emotion should be that of enjoyment of beauty, not that of repulsion from the ugly and the unpleasant."

World Jamboree Collectors Society Blog

Posted in Scouting Blogs and Websites by John E. Pannell on May 30th, 2007 at 12:47 am

While spending a few minutes of time looking for OA issues for this Summer’s World Jamboree, I found the World Jamboree Collectors Society blog.   Bill Mulrenin had previously report this on his NY OA trader blog, but I must have missed it.

There is no information on the blog to tell us who the writer is other than “wjcc”, which seems to be an acronym for “World Jamboree Collectors Club”.   There is no signs of either a collectors club or a collectors society.   The blog appears to be new.   Recent posts highlight issues from American councils and lodges.

It will be interesting to see how this blog developes.   If anyone knows who is behind this blog, please let me know.

Memorial Day 2007

Posted in Miscellaneous by John E. Pannell on May 28th, 2007 at 1:46 am

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure ” — Thomas Jefferson, letter (November 13, 1787)

Let us not forget, on this hallowed day, those men and women whose ultimate sacrifices have secured our freedom and propserity.

Memorial Day was first observed in the aftermath of the Civil War to pay homage to those Union soldiers who died during the course of that war.   A separate memorial day was observed in many states — and still is — for those who died in service to the Confederate States of America.

First officially proclaimed as a day of remembrance in 168 by Gen. John A. Logan, the proclamation for Memorial Day read thusly:

Focus on Fakes: Wahunsenakah 333

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on May 27th, 2007 at 10:49 am

333fakes.jpgThis is outside the normal group of lodges I normally write about here, but I thought it was still worth sharing.

Tim Ewing recently sent me an image of what the folks in Wahunsenakah lodge are considering a fake of their “Honor flap”, Blue Book S11.  He wrote:

“It does not match the issues of the flap.

Now on these that you see in the picture, Logs are darker, Duck wing is more dark blue, brown on duck is different. If you look at it close, you can tell it is a copy. These are fakes on eBay.” Continue Reading »

Comment Spam: From American Universities?

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on May 26th, 2007 at 7:24 am

The software powering this blog has now caught over 1500 spam comments, lately averaging about 30 spam per day.   As the blog become more established this will probably only increase.  Only one or two spam comments have gotten through and I deleted those quickly.

The spam attempts are for the usual products and services that are commonly pushed through bulk/junk emails.   If you’re active on the internet, you know what they are.   I am noticing something interesting though with a lot of these messages.

Chiefly Patches, Part 3: Lodge of the Central Region Chief

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on May 23rd, 2007 at 11:04 pm

This is the third of an ongoing series of articles about patches issued by the lodges of the national officers of the Order of the Arrow.   Previous articles can be found at these links.

Patches for the Central Region chief did not consistently appear from the lodges until the late 1990s.   As a general rule only one or two patches were issued by the various lodge’s for the region chiefs.

Japeechen Lodge: Encouraging Retention and Advancement

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on May 21st, 2007 at 1:43 am

Japeechen lodge has recently issued a set of six round patches with a novel concept.    The lodge recognizes that the future of the Order lies with today’s Cub Scouts, Webelos and younger Scouts who in time will become eligible to be inducted into the Order of the Arrow.

As reported to me these six patches tie in with advancement through Scouting, from Wolf Cub Scout up through the rank of 2nd year camper Boy Scout.   The awards also tie in with attendance at camp, in a fashion not too dissimilar to that used by Mic-O-Say and other camp based programs.

The Jersey Shore Council reports these requirements on their website (long quote follows):
