Lodge 236: 2007 Dixie Fellowship Issues

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Unali'yi 236 by John E. Pannell on May 10th, 2007 at 12:30 am

Unali’yi 236 let their inner nerd show at this year’s Dixie Fellowship.

They issued a flap with a matching “dangle” this year, following their very geeky theme.  Two patch sets, where the bottom is meant to be a pocket hanger type patch seem to be becoming more popular in this part of the country.

Does anyone know what the writing across the top of the flap means?

Blue Book style information for these issues follows:

Issue Bdr Color/Type Bkgd Name fdl/BSA Comments
S62? M/C C BLK DYL BLK fdl; SR-5 Sectioin Fellowship 2007
X16? BLK C M/C RED GRY fdl; bottom for S62, lower half of “Nerd”

    “Does anyone know what the writing across the top of the flap means?”

    Yes.

  2. Dave Scocca Says:

    And where is your server located that it says I posted an hour before I actually did?

  3. Chris Brightwell Says:

    The text across the top is the lodge’s name (Ukali’yi) in hex.

    Break the string into one-byte segments:
    55 6b 61 6c 69 27 79 69

    Convert each byte to decimal independently:
    85 107 97 108 105 39 121 105

    Grab your handy ASCII lookup table and match everything up:
    U k a l i ‘ y i

    I actually have a binary/hex/octal/decimal/ascii chart on my wall here at the house, so I guess I cheated. :)

    Chris, you are such a computer nerd. Just kiddin’, I’m glad you know more about computers than I, that way I always know who to call. :)

  5. Dave Scocca Says:

    I cheated too. The SAS program:

    data _null_ ;
    length x $10 ;
    x='556e616c69277969'x ;
    put x= ;
    run ;

    produced the output:

    x=Unali'yi

    You guys are scarey…

    So who’s correct: Chris Brightwell’s look up tables or Dave Scocca’s SAS program? Sorry, Chris, but my money’s on Dave here!

  7. Chris Brightwell Says:

    I misread the E on the flap as a B. That explains the difference.
