Dean Smith received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree last Sunday at UNC’s graduation.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Dean Smith did not seek fame or personal recognition during his time as head coach of North Carolina’s men’s basketball team, but 10 years after his retirement, the former Tar Heel head coach received one of the University’s highest honors, a honorary degree at the annual spring Commencement ceremony.

While the skies may not have been Carolina Blue on Sunday morning, as ominous gray clouds hung over Kenan Stadium, a crowd of spectators who had assembled to see children, siblings, relatives, friends, and loved ones graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill gave Smith a memorable show of respect in the form of an extended standing ovation.
