Chiefly Patches, Part 3: Lodge of the Central Region Chief

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on May 23rd, 2007 at 11:04 pm

This is the third of an ongoing series of articles about patches issued by the lodges of the national officers of the Order of the Arrow.     Previous articles can be found at these links.

Patches for the Central Region chief did not consistently appear from the lodges until the late 1990s.     As a general rule only one or two patches were issued by the various lodge’s for the region chiefs.

After abandoning the 12 region setup in the early 1970s  and prior to 1993 the BSA organized the country into six regions.     What is now the Central Region was the majority of the older East Central and North Central Regions.     Two lodges in these regions issued patches for their chiefs.

1988:   Steve Meinhold, Shawnee 51 (North Central Region). Shawnee lodge didn’t officially issue any patches for Mr. Meinhold.   However, the patch listed as  the ZS2 was made to commemorate his tenure.

While I’m not certain, it seems Mr. Meinhold may now be a political science professor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.     The background and age would seem to indicate this is the former NC Region Chief.

1989:   Kevin Bokesh, Neatoka 396 (East Central Region). Neatoka issued their S11 to honor Mr. Bokesh’s service.   No patches would be issued for the chief from what is now the Central Region for several years after this.

1996:   J.J. Arnold, Awase 61. There was one patch bearing Awase lodge’s name for this year’s Central Region Chief.     It was previously listed in Blue Book as S7, but is now listed as the ZS1.

1998:   Ryan King, Nischa Chuppecat 212. Nischa Chuppecat honored this year’s Region Chief, commemorated their 25th anniversary, and made a patch for the 1998 NOAC all at the same time with their S17.

1999:   Aaron Kreager, Kit-Ki-Hak-O-Kut 97. Blue Book’s S16 was issued to honor Mr. Kreager’s service as Region Chief.

2000:   Luke Wolfe, Chemokemon 226. The S46 was issued by Chemokemon in honor fo Mr. Wolfe’s election.     The lodge was the home of the 1997 National Chief and would see another of its brothers elected region chief in 2003.

2001:   Dominique Baker, Blue Ox 26. Blue Book’s F1 commemorates Mr. Baker’s tenure as Central Region Chief.

2002:   Brian Herren,  Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock 467. The F4, issued for the lodge’s 50th anniversary and the 2002 NOAC denotes them as the “Home of the Central Region Chief”.     A small “BH” is embroidered on the right side of the flap, below the shape of Iowa in token of Brian Herren.

2003:   Adam Enerson, Chemokemon 226. Chemokemon lodge issued their S53 and S54 for the 2003 Central Region Chief.     Mr. Enerson was the lodge’s second brother to be elected region chief in just four years.    He was also the third national level officer from the lodge in less than a decade!

2004:   Joe Sadewasser, Timmeu 74. Timmeu lodge was a bit creative in honor their lodge brother’s election to the office of Region Chief.     “Red Haired Warrior” is the English interpretation of Mr. Sadewasser’s Vigil name.     The lone flap is this lodge’s S15.

2005:   Paul Jensen, Pa-Hin 27. I do not believe Pa-Hin lodge issued any patches for their brother, the 2005 Central Region Chief.

2006:   Russ Brenehan, Shawnee 51. The lodge’s traditional flap design was modified to honor the the 2006 Region Chief.       Though not yet listed in Blue Book, I am aware of two flaps that were issued for Mr. Brenehan which I have tentatively labelled the “S24?” and “S25?.

2007:   Don Hough, Lakota 175. Lakota lodge has issued three flaps for the 2007 Central Region Chief.   All share the same design, but with different border colors.   I have tentatively labelled them as “S34?” through “S36?”.

If anyone can correct or add to this list, please let me know either by email or by adding a comment to this post.     Thanks.

Additional Credits and Thanks:

(Updated 6/19/2007 to add Lakota lodge issues for Don Hough, 2007 Central Region Chief.)
