I Kan Spel Reel Gud?
Many people have trouble spelling and pronouncing lodge names. In some cases the lodge name is even mispronounced when announcing major awards at NOAC, like my lodge’s name was. Lodge members even stumble over their own lodge’s name. So, it shouldn’t be surprising that lodges have had their official names misspelled on their own patches.
Joe Taylor recently wrote on patch-l that he collects patches with misspelled lodge names. He graciously shared his list with me. I was even able to add a few recent items to his list.
The list, with my additions, is shown below. The lodges are listed in order by their historical numbers, followed by how the name is misspelled and the Blue Book issue. If the error is one of lodge number, the number shown on the patch is given.

I have included issue numbers in many cases where Joe’s list did not include them. There are still a few pieces where I am not sure what patch he refers to. Joe also included on his list patches with erroneous dates, like the S4 from Tonkawampus 16. These are beyond the scope of spelling and number errors, and not included here.
It can be argued that all the lodges that have used their council numbers on patches are also misnumbered. I really don’t want to get into that argument right now. They might be a topic for a future post here.
If anyone knows of any further additions please write either me or Joe Taylor (lamajo@sbcglobal.net).

There’s also another category of misspelling, exemplified by the Nentico 12 eX2001-2 for the Fall “Felowship”.
Hmmm…
Maybe we need to add a “speling” bee to the next NOAC’s list of competitions. Just imagine the patch that the champion lodge could design!
How about the 1973 NE4B conclave? It was held at Forestburg Scout Reservation, but the patch read “Frostburg”…..
