Chiefly Patches, Part 4: Lodge of the Northeast Region Chief
It’s been a while since the last part of this series. Some probably thought I had forgotten about these. It takes some time to get these posts together and, not too surprisingly, my focus here is more on issues from my neck of the woods.
This is the fourth of an ongoing series of articles about patches issued by the lodges of the national officers of the Order of the Arrow. Previous articles can be found at these links.
- Part 1: Lodge of the National Chief
- Part 2: Lodge of the National Vice Chief
- Part 3: Lodge of the Central Region Chief
1990: Matthew D. Hoag, Amangamek-Wipit 470. Back in the days before this lodge issued patches in a fashion that seems almost as rapid as the US Mint makes shiny new quarters, Amangamek-Wipit issued the S14 for Mr. Hoagi’s service. There are two varieties of this issue with the shape and color of the turtle being the distinguishing characteristics.
1992: Sean Oldroyd, Tankiteke 313. The lodge issued a single flap, an interesting variation on the traditional representation of this lodge’s totem, honoring the region chief from their lodge. Blue Book lists it as S39.
1994: Zieak McFarland, Ty-Ohni 95. Ty-Ohni lodge did not have any official lodge issues for Mr. McFarland. However, there was a silk-screened flap-shaped patch that Blue Book lists as eF1994-3, formerly labelled ZF3. I have also been made aware of a second, similar patch which I have tentatively labelled “eF1994-4?” (pictured).
1996: Joe Mariscano, Susquehannock 11. Susquehannock is apparently the first northeastern lodge to follow the current custom of issuing a flap for a national officer that can only be obtained from that officer, a sort of “special favor” patch. The white bordered S17 was available to all withink the lodge. The silver mylar bordered S18 was only available from Mr. Mariscano.
1997: Joe Barton, Enda Lechuahanne 57. The S11 and S13 from Enda Lechuahanne lodge were specifically issued for this year’s region chief. The S14 and S15, which were the lodge’s 1997 Jamboree flaps, also honor Mr. Barton’s service.
1999: Ken Jenkins, Allemakewink 54. This lodge modified their traditional flap design for the NE Region Chief flap, Blue Book S32.
It’s interesting to see the addition of what looks like an eagle superimposed upon a triangle on the left side of the flap. I wonder if this is meant to indicate that Mr. Jenkins was a Vigil Brother and Eagle Scout at the time this was issued. Does anyone know?
2000: Scott Schmidt, Ho-De-No-Sau-Nee 159. Both twill varieties of this lodge’s F1 and F2 were issued for this year’s region chief.
2001: Pat Boyd, Tschitani 10. Tschitani is yet another lodge that modified a well-done standard flap design in order to create their region chief flap. Blue Book lists this as S17.
2002: Brian Favat, Te’Kening 37. Te’Kening honored the service of Mr. Favat with a colorful flap featuring their lodge’s turkey in its traditional pose. Blue Book lists this as S11.
2003: Ian Pinnavaia, Shu-Shu-Gah 24. Blue Book lists the S43 and S44 as the two flaps issued for Mr. Pinnavaia.
2004: Ed Lynes, Moswetuset 52. Mr. Lynes’ tenure as region chief was honored by two flaps from this lodge. Blue Book list them as the S16 (RED border), S17 (RMY border).
The Scout pictured reminds me somewhat of a cartoon I vaguely remember seeing in Boys’ Life when I was a youth. I don’t know if that was the intention, if this is meant to be a cariacature of Ed Lynes, or something else entirely different.
2005: Dan O’Rourke, Allogagan 83. The S29 from Allogagan lodge was issued in honor of the 2005 NE Region Chief.
2006: Jon Fuller, TKaen Dod 30. TKaen Dod lodge honored Jon Fuller with two flaps. Neither are yet listed in Blue Book but appear on OAImages as the “S26?” and “S27?”.
2007: Ken Hager, Wagion 6. Wagion lodge issued a single flap that sold out at the 2007 NE4B conclave. This is not yet on OAImages, but will likely be called the S31. If anyone can supply an image of this patch, please send it to me. Also, don’t forget to send information about this issue to the Pennsylvania Blue Book editor so it can be properly listed in the next edition.
If anyone can correct or add to this list, please let me know either by email or by adding a comment to this post. Thanks.

John,
Mark Belli, was a member of Shu Shu Gah Lodge #24 not #470. Shu Shu Gah did not issue a flap for Mark. I was Mark’s Chapter Advisor (1986)before he became Lodge Chief (1987-1988), and Section Chief (1987-1988) and finally Northeast Region Chief. He was NER Chief in 1989, not 1990. Mark was also a chapter advisor for a short time several years ago.
Oops… I was given bad information. Then who was NE Region Chief in 1990 from 470?
I’m delete Belli’s name from the 1990 entry.
1990 NE Region Cheif: Matthew D. Hoag, according to http://www.northeast.oa-bsa.org/index.php?p=past_officers
Thanks, to Google I found that quickly.

John,
In 1999, Mt. Allamuchy (the camp associated with then Morris-Sussex and Allemakewink) was celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. The council execs. wanted to create a trademark for the camp, and so that Anheuser-Busch type symbol is what they came up with. That was put on Ken’s flap and camp patches for a few years. (You can see one example at campimages: http://www.campimages.com/4image/details.php?image_id=2809) I’m not sure if they still put it on the camp patches.

Eric
