Skyloo 442 - District Issue vs. Chapter Issue

scan0009.jpgAs time passes so does does the knowledge of why a patch was issued.  This has been the case with Skyloo 442/Columbia Pacific Council.

Over the past several months several items have appeared on ebay and in the blue book that suggest that a chapter in Skyloo issued a patch or neckerchief.  As the co-historian of 442 along with Paul Collett, I am going to shed some light on this subject.

Only a couple of items are legit chapter issue items for Skyloo 442.  The first one is the Covered Wagon N1 (this may actually have existed when the lodge was known as Hyas Chuck - not confirmed).  The next one is Nekamas X1 (Clackamas Distict).  The last is the Thunderbird R1.  I have not seen the Thunderbird X1 so I am neither confirming or denying its existance.

Several pieces issued by Columbia Pacific Council are district patches using the Chinook Jargon Native american Language.  The most recent to show up on ebay is an X issue used by Clackamas District.  It is their normal district patch with a yellow border and blue background that says Ne-Ka-Mas.  It was not an chapter issue.

Another piece that has an interesting history is the Pioneer Chapter YA1.  This patch was issued at a camporee in 1980 or 1981 (The exact year escapes me).  The OA chapter staffed the event so in recognition of that the MGM was incorporated into the patch.  Some can argue that since it recognized the chapter it is a chapter issue - time will probably eliminate the y from the designation.

The last chapter I will address is Siwash Chuck Klatawa Illahee.  This was not actually a chapter or a district.  It was really Yamhill/Yamhelas district.  The patch has a Native American name and are flap shape but were mainly wore on the right sleeve.  Some rebel chapter members wore the patch on the pocket flap location to protest the lodge name change from Hyas Chuck Kah Sun Klatawa to Skyloo (that is another story).  There are two different pieces issued.

Now for collecting the lodge - if you want to include these pieces in your 442 collection they are available but some are real hard to find.  I have all of them except the Covered Wagon N1 and the Thunderbird X1.  I will address the Wauna La-Mon’Tay 442 Chapter/District issues in an upcoming blog.
