This Is a YMCA Pin, Not an OA Vigil Pin

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on August 31st, 2007 at 2:48 am

ymcapin.jpgRoy More recently wrote about this pin on his blog.   I had not seen it before, but apparently it appears on eBay with some frequency.

As Roy tells us, it is a common YMCA pin.   This is not an OA piece.   I guess some folks are quick to assume anything with a triangle on it must be an undiscovered and rare OA pin?

When I heard the learn'd astronomer,
When the proofs, the figure, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.

An Inconvenient Truth?

Be advised, I’m going to stray far afield of patches here.

Algore and fellow cultists in the Church of Earth Mother Gaia, as some call the Global Warming alarmists like to cite concensus in support of their pseudo-science.  It turns out they’re right:  there is consensus.   The problem is that it disagrees with their politically and financially motivated positions.

Category IconLodge 134: 2007 Ice Cream Social

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Tsali 134 by John E. Pannell on August 29th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

This past Summer at Camp Daniel Boone Tsali lodge held an ice cream social on Wednesday evenings before their dance and drum practice and the weekly OA call-outs.   This patch was given to those OA members who attended.

The design depicts a Smoky Mountains landscape framed by a compass housing.  The lodge’s totem appears in red next to the fleur d’lis.   Thanks to Hank Birdsong for the news and image of this patch.

Category IconLodge 104: Medical Staff Private Issue

Posted in Occoneechee 104, SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on August 28th, 2007 at 1:00 am

I seem to be spending a lot of time recently writing about fakes and private issues. Here’s one more private issue, this time from Occoneechee lodge.

This patch appeared last April at the 2007 SR-7B Conclave. It was used by those who were on the Medical staff at this event. I had previously mentioned this patch on this blog, erroneously dubbing it “ZX2?”, but was unable to picture it at that time. I can now picture this item thanks to a collector who wishes to remain anonymous.

Category IconThe year is 2004, Wauna La-Mon’Tay issues activity patches for multiple events

Posted in Oregon Lodges, Wauna La-Mon'Tay 442 by skyloo442 on August 26th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

Ok, so I got long winded on the title but hey this was the first year that Wauna La-Mon’Tay issued patches for two of three major events.

The first event that warranted a patch was the Rendezvous of the Order held in March.  This was a square patch with a mountain man as the main focus of the patch.  Yes, no bear but I was told the mountain man had a bear claw necklace.

The next patch was issued for our Leadership Development Conference.  Funny thing is that no mention of the lodge or order of the arrow is on the patch.  The only thing that refers to the lodge is the bear.  The lodge invited all of the scouts in the council to this event.  We ran out of patches, so getting a dupe was very difficult.

Category IconEchockotee Lodge 200, new and newly found

Posted in Echockotee 200, Florida Lodges by Robert Mathis on August 25th, 2007 at 7:41 pm

200 Saturiwa Chapter R-1; 2007The latest piece to come from Florida (aka “God’s Waiting Room”) is out of Echockotee Lodge 200.  Saturiwa Chapter has made their first non-camporee patch (R-1), made in memory of a chapter member that passed away on January 17 of this year.  The Indian characature was used by Saturiwa’s Shawnee District as far back as the 1970s, and permission was obtained from Mohawk Carpets to use their logo for this patch.

Other recently found obscurities have also come from Echockotee.  The first, from Saturiwa Chapter, was for a camporee that was put on in 1998.  The “saturn” design is a totem of the chapter.  I have been assured that the design in the middle of the patch is an Indian.  I will have to take their word for it.

Category IconWauna La-Mon’Tay 442, 2006 Activity Issues

Posted in Oregon Lodges, Wauna La-Mon'Tay 442 by skyloo442 on August 25th, 2007 at 5:56 pm

442-2006set.jpgHere is the second in my series of activity patches from 442 Wauna La-Mon’Tay.  In 2006 the lodge again decided to issue patches for their 3 major events.

The general concept of the design was a medicine wheel with two feathers dangling from it.  The first event patch was issued for the Native American Arts & Ceremonis Seminar.  As you can tell it was left hand feather.  About 500 of theses were made and siince the events only had 150-200 attendees there were left over patches.

Back Online

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on August 24th, 2007 at 5:44 pm

I woke up on Thursday and saw a message from a friend of mine that he was having trouble accessing this blog.  It seems the MySQL server that powers this and a few other things on the site had gone down.   That happens a few times, and a stop and restart usually solves the problem.   I did that and all appeared fine.

Thursday night I saw the blog was down again, for the same reason.   This time not all went so smoothly and the MySQL server was completely shut down.  I couldn’t get it back up, so I contacted my collocation folks for help.

They were able to get things up again and in the process upgraded the MySQL server — it was *badly* out of date — to a more recent one.   All appears fine now and I apologize if anyone was inconvenienced by this.

The good side of all this is I should be able to upgrade to a more recent version of WordPress now.   I’ll probably do that over the weekend.  If all goes well no one notices when it happens!

Other than that it’s been a very quiet week here.

Our Founder’s Voice

Posted in Scouting, other than collecting by John E. Pannell on August 22nd, 2007 at 2:43 am

Bill Topkis shared this last night on patch-l:

At the 2006 NOAC Museum the film, Our Founder’s Voice: Dr E. Urner Goodman was shown on continuous loop. The short documentary was made by my oldest son Jake and this week he put it up on You Tube. To view the film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsx2bAwjLwA . Anyone that desires to embed the film (attention lodge webmasters) may do so. Just follow the above URL and you will find the embed information.

I tried to embed the video within this blog entry by following the instructions on You Tube but it didn’t work.   That could be an issue with the software powering this blog.  Your mileage may vary.

Legacy Interviews at TSPA Blog

Posted in Scouting Blogs and Websites by John E. Pannell on August 19th, 2007 at 11:07 pm

Roy More has started conducting and posting a service of “Legacy Interviews” on his blog.  His first interview was with Mr. Walter Helmreich, a participant at the 1933 World Jamboree.   It is interesting to his his recollections of that event and some of the founders of the Scouting movement.

He also is willing to open up posting to other interested interviewers.   Towards that end he has published a pdf file containing Guidelines for Conducting a Scouting Legacy Interview.   This is a neat idea that I hope can take off.

In recent years, two long time Scouters I thought very highly of passed on and I regret I never was able to sit down and interview them on their Scouting and life experiences.   A lot of historical knowledge was lost with their passing.

An Infestation of Idiots

Posted in Personal Stuff by John E. Pannell on August 17th, 2007 at 4:41 am

Lately it seems all the idiots of the world are converging on me, or at least getting in my way.   There’s too many stories to recount here but I’d like to share one from Wednesday night at work.   All names are fictional.

A guest was expecting a package on Tuesday from a well known express delivery service.   It didn’t come.   Wednesday night when I came to work, it still wasn’t here.   So the guest called that company, while at the desk, and was told it was delivered here.    The front desk manager, on duty that evening, queried them if it was delivered *here* (yes, they said) then had the guest ask the company who signed for it “here”.   The name given was not one of our employees.
