100 Years Ago Today
One hundred years ago today Lt. Gen. Robert Baden-Powell and 22 boys began an encampment on Brownsea Island. This event is considered to be the founding of the Scouting movement.
Baden-Powell was widely revered as a hero in the United Kingdom as the events of the Seige of Mafeking. In addition to many decorations and honors he was later created the first Baron of Gilwell. That title is currently held by his grandson, the 3rd baron. Both the current Baron Baden-Powell and his brother are active in Scouting in the UK and Australia.
