I woke up on Thursday and saw a message from a friend of mine that he was having trouble accessing this blog.  It seems the MySQL server that powers this and a few other things on the site had gone down.   That happens a few times, and a stop and restart usually solves the problem.   I did that and all appeared fine.

Thursday night I saw the blog was down again, for the same reason.   This time not all went so smoothly and the MySQL server was completely shut down.  I couldn’t get it back up, so I contacted my collocation folks for help.

They were able to get things up again and in the process upgraded the MySQL server — it was *badly* out of date — to a more recent one.   All appears fine now and I apologize if anyone was inconvenienced by this.

The good side of all this is I should be able to upgrade to a more recent version of WordPress now.   I’ll probably do that over the weekend.  If all goes well no one notices when it happens!

Other than that it’s been a very quiet week here.
