“New” Old Lodges Added: Part 2

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on September 26th, 2007 at 1:42 am

In early August I had posted about several older lodge names being added to this site.   Once again, the number of lodges represented on this site has jumped and for the same reason.

A seller on eBay has been creating “replica” patches.   Lately he has been manufacturing placeholder issues for old lodges that never issued any patches of their own.   In my opinion he has been clear about what these are, but I can imagine unknowledgeable collectors in the future being fooled by these.

W1C Conclave - 2007

Posted in OAImages News, Oregon Lodges by skyloo442 on September 24th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

w1c-j.jpgWell it is 24 hours since I left the 2007 W1C Conclave.  I enjoyed the conclave as I feel that the program was well put together this year.  Walamootkin 336 was the host lodge this year.  Other lodges in that section are 266 Tukarica, 311 Es-Kaielgu, 363 Ma-I-Su, and 614 Tataliya. This section includes Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington and a majority of Idaho.

The Section issued 5 patches for the 2007 conclave.  3 Pocket Patches and a couple of Jacket Patches.  The section ran out of Participant Patches and Staff Patches and had very few Auction Patches left over.  The regular jacket patch was still available and all of the $300 donation/Auction jacket patches were claimed.  The attandance was above normal which was a pleasant surprise.

Sounding Like a Broken Record?

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on September 19th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I’ll jump on my soapbox again about special awards and fake patches.   If you want to give a special award to one or some of your lodge brothers, please take my advice and don’t make it a patch!

I was recently writing to a friend of mine in another lodge about an ongoing problem they have had with a certain award’s patch.   The lodge leadership created an award scheme for brothers who made a very significant service commitment to one aspect of the lodge’s program.  They were to be awarded a special jacket patch upon completion of the requirements.   After a couple of years, very few brothers had earned the award but the patches started to show up on eBay in quantity.  This is a very familiar story.   The manufacturer had used an overseas subcontractor and additional supplies made their way into the collectorate.    This shouldn’t suprise anyone anymore.

Blog’s First Aniversary

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on September 18th, 2007 at 12:01 am

In May 2007 this site turned 10 years old, quite the accomplishment for an website.   Today this blog celebrates its first anniversary.

During this past year blog visitors have read my opinions on patches and patch collecting, been kept up to date on new issues in the Carolinas, and had glimpsesi at other things in life that interest me.  Also, through this blog, this site has been opened up to contributing writers for the first time.  It’s been fun for me and I hope it has been for the reader, too.

Lodges aren’t the only entities that can celebrate anniversaries, as Tipisa Lodge 326’s Tomoka Chapter has shown. The chapter took orders for their anniversary sets, and has released their first three pocket patches and a jacket patch.

W1A Conclave patchWell last weekend witnessed the annual edition of the W1A Conclave, held at Hoodoo Ski Resort near Sisters, Oregon.  Nearly 500 were in attendance which marks the umpteenth year in a row that the W1A conclave has had the highest attendance in Area 1 of the Western Region.

Again the section held an auction to fill the confers of the section.  Over $12,000.00 was made which marks the 5th time in a row that the section has made over 10 grand in its auction.  It is with pride that we boast the biggest section auction in the nation.

Occoneechee lodge was busy issuing patches this past weekend. In addition to the two 70th anniversary patches posted about yesterday and a fellowship patch to be detailed later, Occoneechee lodge became the second North Carolina lodge to issue a metal flap.

The design features a new and interesting interpretation of the lodge’s totem, the thunderbird. Continue Reading »

Occoneechee lodge will issue two more patches this weekend in honor of their 70th anniversary. Thanks to Greg Grimes for sending me the images of these pieces.

Both patches feature modern reinterpretations of classic Occoneechee patch elements. The arrows protruding from a circle and thunderbird were separately used in early lodge issues. See the lodge’s R1 through R7 for examples of these.

Temporary Technical Difficulties

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on September 13th, 2007 at 12:32 am

Some may have noticed that I’ve been seemingly slow to add stuff to the site lately, both images and prices.   I’ve been having some technical issues that I hope will be worked out soon.

The “real world”, some other interests and a general lack of time have slowed down my work on adding images as well as dealing with the issues involving the price guide.   That has been the greatest of the technical problems.
