Cloth Talk #30: We’re Back!!

Posted in Scouting Blogs and Websites by John E. Pannell on October 31st, 2007 at 12:05 am

Just when I was really beginning to think they had fallen off the face of the Earth and disappeared for good, the guys at ScoutHistory.net have put out a new episode of Cloth Talk, the first since last Spring.  Cloth Talk #30 is now available for downloading either through iTunes or by direct download at http://www.scouthistory.net/blog/. Remember, you do not need to have iTunes installed in order to listen to Cloth Talk. They also have a dialup-friendly version available for those who do not have high speed internet connections.

Category IconLodge 270: New OBV Set

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on October 30th, 2007 at 6:20 am

Skyuka lodge has recently issued new OBV set of flaps, using their traditional double headed thunderbird design. What happened with the prohibition regarding such flaps? Has the prohibition been repealed or modified, or is Skyuka lodge ignoring it?

Thanks to Jeff Cook and Richard Cash for passing these images along to me.

Posted in Scouting Blogs and Websites by John E. Pannell on October 29th, 2007 at 4:19 am

Bill Mulrenin is starting a series of post on his blog entitled “Knowledge Is Power”. The purpose is to educate readers by highlighting interesting and high priced items that appear on eBay.

So far there have been three posts in this series. The first two are about recent eBay sales. The third is a personal tale of about an unlisted Oratam pie.

  1. Nentico 12 X1
  2. Owaneco 313 unlisted Qunnipiac dancers patch
  3. Unlisted Oratam 484 pie

More posts to this series will follow over time as Bill finds interesting items to write about.
You can read what Bill had to say at http://www.nyoatrader.com/blog.

The First 2009 NOAC Patch! Already!?

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on October 28th, 2007 at 10:07 am

I was making a very quick browse through eBay this morning and saw something that caught my interest.

Abnaki 102 has recently issued a set of patches for Scouting’s and the BSA’s centennial. The set features three oddly shaped flaps and a larger patch in the shape of the traditional flap and chevron two-part set. For those keeping track of how The Rules are being enforced, it is notable that the flaps do not conform to the shape of the uniform pocket flap.

Each patch in turn is dated 2007 through 2010. The 2009 patch explicitly says “2009 NOAC Indiana University”. NOAC is still nearly two years away!

From SoCal: Lodge or Council Issue?

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on October 28th, 2007 at 6:01 am

wiatava13.jpgI’ve seen these pieces before, but in the midst of everything else I see I keep pushing these aside and ignoring them. Just recently Richard Gage from New York sent me this image and asked what they are.

It would appear these were issued in 2001. So why was no mention made of these in the Blue Book in 2002… or 2004… or 2006? This makes me wonder if this was not really a lodge issue.

“Hidden” Site Features

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on October 27th, 2007 at 12:57 am

There’s a few features on OAImages that appear that are, to varying degrees, hidden to some users Most of these can be found fairly easily. One has been deliberately hidden as I still consider it a “beta” page, a work in progress, and am not completely satisfied with it.

Here they are:

That Time of Year Again

Posted in Tarheel Basketball by John E. Pannell on October 26th, 2007 at 2:49 am

It’s that time of year again.

Forget about the World Series!  Today’s USA Today has published the ESPN / USA-Today Coaches Poll for men’s basketball (not yet online as I type this).   Guess who’s number one.

Category IconNew Tipisa 326 Chapter patch

Posted in Florida Lodges, Tipisa 326 by Robert Mathis on October 24th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

326-estiotee-x-2-2007.jpg   Estiotee Chapter of Tipisa Lodge 326 has created a new emblem, their second version of this design (X-2).  At first glance, this will be a “whats-it?” patch for years to come.  Aside from the WWW, there are no letters.  Unless one knows that the tipi on the cap is the totem of Tipisa, and the totem of the chapter is the turtle, its origin and purpose would be unknown.

Category IconLodge 270: Unlisted 1985 Event Patch

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on October 23rd, 2007 at 3:15 am

Skyuka lodge went through a period during the 1970s and 1980s where their Spring and Fall activity patches shared the same design.   Some of these events name both patches on each event, with the only distinguishing difference being the border color.  Unless one was familiar with the lodge’s issue (or carefully read this site) there would be no way of knowing which patch was for which event.

Certainly this has confused folks over the years.   Some may have even erroneously thought that either patch was for both events.   Given that there has been less than perfect editing of the South Carolina lodges in the past, it is not at all unreasonable that an event patch might be missed under these circumstances.   This is one such missed patch.

Phillie Scout Office Rent to Rise

Posted in Current Events by John E. Pannell on October 22nd, 2007 at 3:03 am

Barring a change in position by the city of Philadelphia, the Cradle of Liberty Council is set to see the annual rent on their historic headquarters building rise from $1 to $200,000 per year.l

Fox News reported on this a few days ago:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,303420,00.html

Numerous other media outlets have also reported this story.   The crux of the situation is that Philadelphia law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.   The city tried to find a solution with the Cradle of Liberty Council but the council had no real choice but to abide by the BSA’s policy on this issue, which was obviously not acceptable to Philadelphia.   The council must either vacate the building they have occupied since the Hoover administration or pay the $200,000 annual rent.
