Lodge 270: Unlisted 1985 Event Patch

Posted in SR-5 Lodges, Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on October 23rd, 2007 at 3:15 am

Skyuka lodge went through a period during the 1970s and 1980s where their Spring and Fall activity patches shared the same design.   Some of these events name both patches on each event, with the only distinguishing difference being the border color.  Unless one was familiar with the lodge’s issue (or carefully read this site) there would be no way of knowing which patch was for which event.

Certainly this has confused folks over the years.   Some may have even erroneously thought that either patch was for both events.   Given that there has been less than perfect editing of the South Carolina lodges in the past, it is not at all unreasonable that an event patch might be missed under these circumstances.   This is one such missed patch.

Thanks to Brad Hutto, I can now report on the Fall 1985 patch.  The Spring patch is currently catalogued as eX1985.   This Fall patch is identical except for the change in border color from green to brown. Also note Blue Book currently states the eX1985 has a rolled edge border but the patch has a cut edge border. Lastly, both patches are arrowhead shaped and should be listed as eA issues and not eX issues.

Following Blue Book practice, I propose the Spring patch should be renumbered eA1985-1 and the Fall patch inserted as eA1985-2.  Note in general practice items are only renumbered in the specific case of a lodge’s event patch listings increasing from one to some greater number.   Otherwise, Blue Book has always made it a standard practice not to renumber issues between editions.

The Blue Book listings for this lodges 1985 events should read as follows:

Issue Bdr Color/Type Bkgd Name fdl/BSA Comments
eA1985-1? GRN C LBL BLK GRN Arrowhead; BLK “1985″; GRN “Spring”; BRN “Fall”; DJ; 75th BSA
eA1985-2? BRN C LBL BLK GRN Arrowhead; BLK “1985″; GRN “Spring”; BRN “Fall”; DJ; 75th BSA

Has Blue Book missed any other events patches from this lodge?

When I heard the learn'd astronomer,
When the proofs, the figure, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.
