These 50 States: South Carolina
This is the third in an ongoing series of posts about state shaped patches. Previous entries have covered state shaped patches from North Carolina and Virginia.
The Palmetto State is a bit unusual when it comes to OA patch collecting. The five lodges in the state have yet to experience a merger. For most of their existence they have all be in the same section, currently SR-5. South Carolina collectors can also be rather passionate about their material. For some this passion can seemingly border on religious.
Three South Carolina lodges have issued patches in the shape of their state: Santee 116, Atta Kulla Kulla 185, and Skyuka 270.
Santee used the shape of South Carolina for four of their patches.
The X2 through X4 were respectively the lodge’s sole issue for the 1994, 1996 and 1998 NOACs. The shape was modified slightly for the X2 and X3 so as to accomodate the tail of the Carolina Parakeet, the lodge’s totem.
This shape was also used on the eX1977, issued for the lodge’s Spring Fellowship that year.
Atta Kulla Kulla lodge also used their state’s shape on a NOAC patch. A bright yellow monochrome patch, Blue Book X11, was issued for the 2000 NOAC. It is usually paired with an orange monochrome flap, Blue Book S22, also issued for the same event.
Atta Kulla Kulla has also recently issued two chenilles, tentatively in the shape of South Carolina. These are not yet in Blue Book and have been tentatively labeled as C1 and C2.
Skyuka lodge used this shape for two of their patches. Skyuka was the first lodge to use this shape with a patch issued for their 1960 Annual Lodge Meeting. This is currently unlisted in Blue Book but I have tentatively labelled it the eX1960. Also Spartan chapter has a patch shaped like South Carolina, which I have tentatively labelled the X5.
Though not in the state shape, the shape of South Carolina also appears prominently on several lodge event patches issued in 1982, 1983 and 1992. The 1982 and 1992 patches also highlight the territory of the lodge within the state.
I believe these are all the patches in the shape of South Carolina. Please let me know if there are others that I have missed.
