These 50 States: Montana

Posted in Patch Collecting, These 50 States by John E. Pannell on November 12th, 2007 at 12:27 am

This is the fifth in an ongoing series of posts about state shaped patches. Previous entries have covered state shaped patches from North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

After dwelling in Dixie for a while I thought it was time to move on to the Big Sky country of Montana. Although Montana is now a “one lodge state” six different lodges have existed at various times in this state. As far as I know only the most recent lodge, Apoxky Aio, issued any patches in the shape of Montana.

The first patch was issued for the Montana Centennial 50 miler. Blue Book lists this as J1. Given that a specific event is referenced, complete with dates, I wonder if this should have been listed as some sort of event item instead of with the lodge issues.   I know I have readers from the Northwest, so perhaps they can comment on this patch.

The patch listed as J2 in Blue Book is also shaped like Montana.   This was issued for Apoxky Aio’s 30th anniversary.  It prominently depicts the grizzly bear totem of the lodge as well as the totems of Apoxky Aio’s four immediate predecessors.   Montana’s oldest lodge, Nitapokaiyo 390, also used the grizzly bear as its totem.

These are all I can find for Montana.   Do you know of others?

The top patch looks like it has five different totems in it.
