What’s in Store for eBay? Outlook Hazy
Yesterday Bill Mulrenin made a post on his blog with this same title:
What’s in Store for eBay? Outlook Hazy
In it he links to an article from Wired Magazine that briefly discusses the current state of affairs there. While it obviously does not discuss our little hobby of Scout patch collecting, both the article and its comments are an interesting read.
Bill also links to a couple of articles from The New York Times about complaints from both buyers and sellers on eBay.
eBay’s customers are not “feeling the love” for this company right now. One of its top excecutives is openly trashing the company’s business. Will management listen and address the concerns? Are the stars aligning just right for a new major competitive threat to arise?
For a company like eBay, the two most important barriers to competition are its brand awareness and goodwill. If the eBay brand name is viewed negatively, or they lose the goodwill of its buyers and sellers, it will become very easy for a new competitor to enter the scene and attack their core business. Yahoo! has already tried and failed. Could a company like Google or Amazon pull it off?
