These 50 States: Massachusetts

Posted in Patch Collecting, These 50 States by John E. Pannell on December 21st, 2007 at 5:59 am

It’s been nearly a month since I last  posted anything in this series.   It’s time  I started working on this again.

This is the twelth in an ongoing series of posts about state shaped patches. Previous entries have covered state shaped patches from Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Massachusetts has been home to a lot of lodges that have since merged.     Of the 41 lodges that have existed in the state only 10 are currently active.     Several patches has used the shape of Massachusetts as part the design, however only one issue is shaped like Massachusetts.   This is not too surprising since these lodges as a whole are rather conservative in their patch issuing practices.

There has been a recent  patch produced by an active eBay seller bearing the name of  Winnepurkit 158.   I have tentatively listed this patch as “ZR1?”.

The only authentic solid flap from  Manomet 164, Blue Book’s  S1, prominently features an outline of Massachusetts in its design.

The J4 from Taskiagi 261, pictured at the top of this post, is the only patch I have found in the shape of Massachusetts.     I find it an attractive design.

Abake-Mi-Sa-Na-Ki 393 has  obviously made the use  of this state’s shape a traditional part of their flaps’ designs.      It is  featured on the lodge’s F1, F2, S1 - S9, S12, S13, S15, S16.    The lodge also used this on both neckerchief, N1 and N2, listed in Blue Book.   Lastly the X1 and X2 use the shape.     X3 is not pictured but I suspect it may also use this design.

If I missed any other patches that should be on this list, please let me know.
