UNC 105 — UCSB 70

Old WellIf UNC were to win a National Championship this year, would Occoneechee lodge issue a flap for it?

UNC showed the UCSB Gauchos why they’re the number one team in the country yesterday with a decisive home victory.   I guess they wanted to keep this webmaster, saw this game from the nosebleed zone, happy.

Fans stayed in their seats until the last few seconds to see when Carolina would break the century mark… again.    The Carolina team, whose three point shooting was poor enough to make me groan whenever they took a shot broke the century make on one of their few successful 3 point goals.

With the game easily in hand and 100 point imminent, Coach Williams put in the “bench brothers”   That three pointer was scored by a player who sees so little playing time that his jersey only had a number (45) and no name on it!   As Joedy McCreary, AP Sports Writer, said:

“The only question was whether they would crack the 100-point mark for the fourth time this season. Football player Greg Little, making his debut on in a basketball game, took care of that by hitting a 3 from the right corner with 53 seconds left to make it 101-70 and send the crowd into delirium. “

Little went on to score two more points.  The official team roster assigns him number 34, but he was wearing 45 yesterday.   Oddly, Little doesn’t even show in the box score!

This was on the heels of a lackluster victory over Nichols State that made Coach Williams mad.  Quoting McCreary again,

But Williams was less than satisfied after the Tar Heels’ most recent outing, a sleepy 10-point victory three days earlier against Nicholls State. After that game, the Hall of Fame coach said his goal for the next day’s practice was to run his team hard enough to “see how many guys I can make throw up.” …

…”They had no choice (to play hard) this time. Either that, or get on the track team,” Williams said.

Coach’s message came through clearly to the players:

“Nobody wants to see Coach that mad again, so everybody’s picked up their play,” Lawson said. “When we’ve got a team down 20, get it to 30, make the game out of reach. We’re trying to do everything to please (Williams).”
