265-2008-winter-ordeal.jpg   The new year means a new annual theme for the patches made for O-Shot-Caw Lodge 265’s weekend events: “Rock Concert Posters”.   The first was their Winter Ordeal, held January 11-13. Continue Reading »

CRASH!

“May you live in interesting times.
May you come to the attention of those in authority.
May you find what you are looking for.”

I learned lots of things on Wednesday.   The technology demons were working overtime to haunt and bedevil me.   Mr. Murphy also made an appearance to demonstrate to me his eponymous aphorism.

It started innocently enough.   A friend was coming over to install some lighting in my den for me.     I needed to learn which circuit breaker would turn off the power to my den.     In the process of making that discovery, I also learned which would turn off the power to my office.     That’s when things started going badly.

eBay to Raise Fees

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on January 30th, 2008 at 4:35 am

It takes chutzpah to call a price increase a price cut.     That’s what eBay has recently done.   They’re spinning the facts of this increase with more skill than a US presidential candidate!

Here is what eBay has to say about the recent price changes:

These 50 States: Oklahoma

Posted in Patch Collecting, These 50 States by John E. Pannell on January 29th, 2008 at 6:03 am

Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain
And the wavin’ wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain…

I thought it was well past time to return to a state that actually had some state shaped patches.   Some of these are classics of the hobby, too.

This is the  sixteenth in an ongoing series of posts about state shaped patches. Previous entries have covered state shaped patches from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia.

There seems to be an affinity of sorts between lodge Texas and Oklahoma when it comes to OA collecting.     A couple of lodges chose to use the combined shape of the states of Texas and Oklahoma on their patches.     I will mention them here as well as the post for Texas.

Sunshine Trade-O-Ree, February 8-9, Orlando FL

Posted in Florida Lodges by Robert Mathis on January 28th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

If you really REALLY need a reason to come out of the cold and to Florida in February, the 20th annual Sunshine Trade-O-Ree is a good enough reason.   The event is sponsored by Central Florida Council, and will be held February 8-9 at Camp Down, in suburban Windermere.   Walk-ins are free.   In past years, all of the 100+ tables have been sold out prior to the event.   Motels and restaurants are within five miles of the TOR site, and there is room at the camp for tents and RV’s.

For more information, go to http://www.sunshinetor.com/   There will also be a 20th anniversary CSP produced for the event.   I will be there, near the front corner of the room, along with the other usual suspects.

Wauna La-Mon’Tay 442, 2003 Activity Issue

Posted in Oregon Lodges, Wauna La-Mon'Tay 442 by skyloo442 on January 27th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

scan0021.jpgIn 2003 we issued only one activity patch for the year.   We did not produce one for the NAACS (Winter Fellowship) and the LDC in the Fall.

For the backdrop of this patch we used the retiring MGM Indian design.   The MGM indian is protrayed as smoke rising from the fire (The Spirit of Camping).   A relatively simple design that turned out to be a very nice patch.   There are still a few of these in my dupe stock and seem to trade well overall.

This is one of the only years that we only did a single activity patch.   In preceding years we produced 3 or 4 patches for the same event.   That is why it may  appear difficult to the 442 collector to acquire a patch for this event.   Don’t worry — I assure you that if you need this patch I can hook you up.

Next blog will be for the year 2002.

O-Shot-Caw Lodge 265 wrap-up of 2007

Posted in Florida Lodges, O-Shot-Caw 265 by Robert Mathis on January 27th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

265-2007-section-seminars-contingent.jpg Occasionally it is more difficult to obtain images of items from the lodges of Florida on a timely basis.   O-Shot-Caw Lodge 265 made several items in  the last few months  of 2007, that are now becoming available to picture.   Shown here is the contingent patch for members attending the Section S-4S Seminars in November, and is the last of their 2007 series “Indians of the Southeast“.   While not a lodge event, O-Shot-Caw has made a patch for their attendees to this Sectional event since 2005, as part of the series of themed event patches for those years. Osceola Lodge 564: 2007 activity patches

564-2007-winter-fellowship.jpg 564-2007-vigil-breakfast.jpg In December, Osceola Lodge 564 held their last event of the year, their Winter Fellowship.   This was also the completion of their 2007 series of activity patches “Seminole Shirts”.   The red shirt on the left is for the weekend event itself; the black shirt with the Vigil sash was made for participants in their annual Vigil Breakfast, held at the Fellowship.   For more information on the rest of the 2007 series, look here.

To Do a Good Turn Daily

Posted in Current Events by John E. Pannell on January 27th, 2008 at 11:06 am

Sometimes  one finds a story about someone who follows the good ideals of Scouting, and they’re not even Scouts.     For example, take the story of Erika Gunderson and Brian Ascher recently reported on Yahoo! News:

At dusk on New Year’s Eve, Erika Gunderson got into a taxi in New York City and entered a digital-age mystery. Sitting on the back seat was a nice Canon digital camera. Gunderson asked the driver which previous passenger might have left it, but the cabbie didn’t seem to care. So Gunderson brought it home and showed it to her fiance, Brian Ascher. They decided that the only right thing to do was to find the owner.

Finding the owner turned out to be much harder than they initially bargained for.   The only clues they had were the photos and video on the camera itself.

Working on Unfinished Projects

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on January 26th, 2008 at 7:09 am

At times I think I have some sort of attention deficit disorder.   I am very good at starting projects, but not so good at actually finishing them.     OAImages is littered with things I have started but never quite finished to my satisfaction.     Some are rather obvious (at least to me) and  some are probably never noticed by anyone.

I have been giving some needed attention to one unfinished segment of the site over the past few days, the lodge anniversaries section on the National  & Special Events Patches page.

A Fun Few Days

I'm sure most of you noticed the problems this site has been having over the past few days. It went offline several times. It was a frustrating experience. To add to my woes, I somehow managed to pick up some "bad stuff" on my computer at home. The last time I had this much trouble with my site, server, and home PC I was also let go from my job. Luckily that did NOT happen!

"Techie Talk" follows...

Blocked Emails

I have been made aware this evening of a couple of issues with email.

Hotmail is currently blocking email from some RoadRunner servers at this time. RoadRunner is my ISP and my outgoing mail, except for messages automatically generated by my server come from there. RoadRunner currently has published this notice:

Temporary Email Outage: Resolved

Last Friday RoadRunner started blocking email from my server because of spam without my knowledge. I had been filtering all my incoming mail at OAImages through my RoadRunner so as to filter out most of the several hundred spam messages that I get every day. RoadRunner apparently did not like that. I had no idea the server was being blocked until I saw over 800 notices that email was rejected on my server's queue last night.

This is now resolved and I am now receiving mail again, but it is coming directly (unfiltered) to me from my server, spam and all. I am currently working to block the spam.

If anyone sent me email between Friday morning (9/18) and this morning (9/21), please don't assume I received it. I probably did not see it. Please send again.

Thank you. Read the Full Post

OA Blue Book Going "Web 2.0"

One of the big items of discussion at the recent pre-NOAC TOR was the fate of Blue Book. For those who don't know, the various legal issues in which this became entangled are now resolved. The new editor in chief of the Blue Book is Roy More. His desire is to maintain this resource in electronic and online forms. It has become impractical to publish this in book form as was done for the first six editions.

The goal is to create an "ever green" resource, with active input by collectors. It will be going "Web 2.0" in many respects. OAImages, will remain an integral part in this. This does not mean uncontrolled anarchy though, with lodge listings being changed at will by anyone who chooses. Roy writes:

...OA Blue Book will not become a Wikipedia. This is a standards (sic) project which means there must be structure, discipline and stability. That said, Blue Book will become much more open for all...

There are still many issues that need to be worked out. Roy More has started a blog at oabluebook.com to discuss some of the various issues that need to be resolved. There are only a few posts there now, but he plans to update this frequently. Please check this out and comment on the posts there. Read the Full Post

New Policies on Patches Announced

This post covers an important change in policy that will soon become effective regarding patches issued for all Order of the Arrow lodges chartered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Please read the whole post carefully.

At a recent meeting at the National Headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America, it was announced that a new policy will be put in place by both the Boy Scouts of America and the NationalOrder of the Arrow Committee regarding lodge patch issues. Further announcements and clarifications will be made at this Summer's National Order of the Arrow Conference and at section conclaves throughout the year. This policy will be effective September 1, 2009.

All lodge flaps, and patches issued as multiple piece sets (most commonly two-piece sets) must be ordered through BSA Supply Division, or an official BSA licensee. The national OA and the BSA has decreed that all items must be produced in a minimum quantity of 1000 (one thousand) pieces. In the case where a lodge wishes to make minor changes in design or colors, 1000 of each must be produced.

Should the lodge feel they do not need that many pieces to suit their needs, the BSA Supply Division will purchase all remainders from the manufacturer and retain them. They will be available to the lodges should more be needed. At the BSA's discretion, they will also be made available for sale in all BSA run Scout shops.
