Since We’ve Been Back

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on February 28th, 2008 at 7:49 am

As far as most users will see, everything is finally back to normal here.     The last roadblock was getting the subdomain, blog.oaimages.com, working properly.     There’s still a couple of minor things that aren’t right yet, but the average use will probably never notice.

You may have noticed that I took the opportunity to update WordPress, the software that runs this blog.   I had to first update various other software here, something that would have been cumbersome without doing a complete reinstall like what was done.   The new version of WordPress opens up many new possibilities for this blog and should make life a bit easier for the various contributors here.

Lodge 270: 2008 Lodge Banquet

Posted in SR-5 Lodges,Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on February 28th, 2008 at 6:52 am

270 eX2008-1?This is another of the recent images sent to me by Brad Hutto.     There are several chapter pieces yet to appear online.

Skyuka lodge issued their first activity patch of the year for the 2008 Lodge Banquet.   The patch is shaped like a stereotypical “Indian brave” wearing a single feather.   The design prominently features the lodge’s totem incorporated into a totem pole.

Lodge 560: Tsungani Chapter Flap

Posted in Eswau Huppeday 560,SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on February 27th, 2008 at 12:05 am

560 Tsungani F1David Cody reminds us of a piece that has escaped Blue Book listing for a couple of decades.     This piece was issued by Tsungani chapter and is very rarely seen.       Few were made.     I have to wonder if any made it outside of the lodge, beyond any chapter members who may have moved and taken this with them.

Lodge 270: 2007 Events Patches

Posted in SR-5 Lodges,Skyuka 270 by John E. Pannell on February 26th, 2008 at 12:05 am

270 eA2007-4?A couple of weeks ago Brad Hutto sent me a number of images of new issues from Skyuka 270.   The first of these are the rest of the 2007 activities patches for this lodge.

Skyuka produced two different patches for their 2007 Banquet.   The first version with a blue sun was already on this site as eA2007-1.   The second version has a yellow sun and I have numbered it eA2007-2, renumbering the Spring Fellowship and pre-Dixie patches accordingly.

There are also new patches for the 2007 Ordeal and Fall Fellowship.   All these patches follow the same general design of an American Indian shooting an arrow into the sky, with a mountainous background.     The colors of the mountains  reflect the season in which each event was held.

Lodge 560: 2008 Carolinas Indian Seminar

Posted in Eswau Huppeday 560,SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on February 25th, 2008 at 10:16 am

560 eA2008-1Things are kind of back to normal on this site, even if my personal life is now  a complete mess.   In the week that this blog was off line, I had some new issues to report.     Now it’s time to start adding them here.

In late January Eswau Huppeday lodge hosted the annual Carolinas Indian Seminar.     As is customary in recent years, two patches were issued for the event.     Thanks to David Cody for providing the images for these issues.

Each year’s patch design has followed the same basic scheme: an arrowhead on a light blue background featuring a different style of dancer.   A fancy shawl dancer was featured on this year’s patches.

Hacker Attach Aftermath

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on February 23rd, 2008 at 11:08 pm

As many now know this site and blog was offline most of last week.     We were the victim of a hacker.

This was discovered and confirmed last Sunday night when I was having trouble with the mySQL engine that powers this blog.     We needed to restart the server.   It was at this point that it was confirmed that someone else was using this server without my knowledge.     The hacker had been using the server’s resources for some time, running a password cracker.   This  explains  some of  the problems that had been experienced recently with accessing the site.

Most of the site is back to normal now, but a few issues elude me.     Perhaps some of the techie folks reading this might be able to help.

A Very Rough Week

It’s been a very rough week here.   I’ll write about what happened to this site later.     Thursday morning’s events capped the week off in grand fashion.   I was fired.

Winter In Burlington

Posted in Personal Stuff by John E. Pannell on February 15th, 2008 at 4:52 am

picture-060.jpgI’m waiting on news and images of some rumored new issues, namely forthcoming flaps from Occoneechee, and some activities patches from Eswau Huppeday. I also haven’t had the time to finish some posts on state shaped patches.

So, after seeing the news of the dreadful cold weather around the country this past week, I was going post some pictures of the first signs of Spring here in central North Carolina. However we, too, had an unexpected appointment with Mr. Winter.     Yes, we do get snow here in central North Carolina.

Long time readers of this blog  might remember back to last Spring when I built this small pond, here surrounded by snow and frozen over.

(More pictures follow.)

Time for a New Server

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on February 14th, 2008 at 2:01 am

I’m sure many of you have had some trouble getting on this site in recent weeks.       For that I apologize.

The server this site runs on is now six years old,  aging, and unable to keep up with the demands put upon it.   Some of the software can no longer be upgraded due to the age of the operating system here.     Some possible new features can’t be implemented for the same reason   It’s past time for a new server.

Your help is needed.     I have been expecting this eventuality and putting aside some of the subscription and advertising fund but that is not enough to  pay for the server I think I need.     So, I am setting up a New Server Fund and accepting donations to  it  via PayPal.     If you wish to donate to the new server, please click the button below.

This button will also be put on the main page of this site.   Remember donations are strictly voluntary.     Any amount is appreciated.

I Got Plenty of Nothing

"I got plenty o'nothin' and nothin's plenty for me..."

Wow, where did August go? Most of the month has gone by with nothing new appearing on this blog. It seems like it was only a few days ago that I was struggling with the server switch and site relocation. That is all done now and things appear to be going well. There are still some issues with broken links and missing images but I may be able to resolve that over the weekend. It's good to not have to worry about possible hardware failures.

25 Hours Later

The mail server at OAImages' new home has now remain unblocked by what I call the "internet gods" for over 25 hours now. That's a very good sign that they agree my server is clean and not a spammer. It appears my email problems are now resolved.

I only wonder who had this ip address before me and what were they doing to merit notice by CBL.

I will continue to monitor this situation. However if you have trouble getting email from this site's server, especially concerning passwords for the members area, please see my previous post on this subject. Read the Full Post

Concerning Email and Broken Links

Update: 8/7/10 @ 1400: The block by CBL has been lifted for over four hours now. This is a good sign, but not a resolution of the problem below... yet.

Automated emails from this site's mail server are currently being blocked by many or most ISPs. It has been listed on the Composite Blocking List for being compromised in some way. I have already had it delisted, but it has been listed again.

This most directly affects subscribers to the site as it prevents automated messages concerning passwords from being delivered. I consider this a critical issue. If it cannot be resolved soon, I will return to the old server and hosting solution. In the mean time, please read the rest of this message if you are experiencing difficulties logging into the members area!

Watching The Traffic

I've been watching the traffic flow into the site since I flipped the switch here last night. It looks like DNS entries propagate very fast these days! That's a far cry from what I remember when I first built this domain when it still took several days for a DNS change to take effect.

If you want to see what sort of traffic this site gets, you can view the stats here:

Wilkommen, Bien Venue, Welcome

If you see this post you have accessed OAImages on its new home. It has been running at its IP address for over a week now. A few days ago, oaimages.net was pointed here. Late Thursday night, the switch was flipped for OAImages.com. It may take a couple of days for the DNS changes to propagate around the internet so some visitors may see this site sooner than others.

I expect there to be a few hiccups. Please let me know, preferably in the comments, if you experience any problems.

Thank you.

Today's Status Report

"Everything is in a state of flux, including the status quo." - Robert Byrne

Another portion of this site's move has been accomplished. This blog's software, Wordpress, is now installed and running at the new location. Perhaps I should call it "OAImages Blog 2.0"?

Until the move is final, this blog will continue to be updated periodically. However, my primary focus now is on the site move. All previous blog posts and data will be transferred to the new location in due course.

My goal is to be moved into the new location by the time everyone returns home from the Jamboree, or shortly thereafter.
