dook 89 — UNC 78

Last night was The Game.

Here in central North Carolina college basketball is very popular.     The rivalry between Duke University and UNC is longstanding and intense.   The teams play each other twice a year, once in Chapel Hill and once in Durham.     Currently dook is ranked number 2 nationally, and  Carolina is ranked number three.    Adding more intensity to this year’s rivalry is that some games in the first few rounds of the NCAA tournament will be played in Raleigh and Charlotte.   You can all have your  Super Bowl and the one Giant loss.     We have  the dook-UNC game.

Alas, Carolina did not play like the third best  team in the nation.   Their offense was  weakened by the recent injury of Ty Lawson.    There were also several mental lapses, against a team where mental mistakes will kill you.   They seemed to fall into the trap of playing dook’s game instead of Carolina’s.

Then there is Wayne Ellington.     God help me!   Will someone please tell him he is not a great 3 point shooter!?     Carolina needs help with 3 point shooting… and Ellington is not the answer!     True, he had a great game against Clemson, but his more recent outings leave me distinctly unimpressed.   I cringe when I see Carolina try to hit a three pointer. (bonk)

The end result was predictable.   It was a very intense game but Carolina clearly was not the better team on the floor.   In spite of Hansbrough’s 28 points, the Tar Heels fell to dook by a score of 89-78.

Carolina now falls to 21-2.     They next host Clemson on  the 10th.

By the way, I hope this is the only time you’ll see a picture of the Duke Chapel on this blog!
