Northeastern Region Reorganization

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on March 20th, 2008 at 12:02 am

ner-210.jpgShortly after posting last night about the recent BSA Southern Region reorganization, I received word from someone who wishes to remain anonymous that the Northeastern region is also to be reorganized, effective July 1st, 2008.

The map of the region showing the new area boundaries is at the top of the post. Click it to see a larger version.

The rest of this message lists the lodges of this region by current OA section showing what BSA area they will be part of under the reorganization. As with the Southern Region reorganization post, I need to stress that this is not necessarily how the OA sections will be organized. While sections follow area boundaries, in so much as lodges must be in the same BSA area to be in the same OA section, they may also be a subdivision of an area.

Remember the purposes of the areas in the BSA and the sections in the OA.    Areas are a management construct for the BSA to manage councils and their employees.  The Order of the Arrow establishes sections for the primary purpose of the section conclave and various training initiatives.

Let me repeat,  these new areas are not necessarily the same as the sections.  If lodges that are currently in the same section will be parts of different areas, their sections will also be different.  However, the at least a few of these areas probably will be subdivided into sections like the current areas are.

"If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves."

    Wow. I’d heard this was coming; some details I’d heard turned out to be correct, others not. It’s good to see Nentico back in a section named NE-6.

    I believe this is the first time ever that Chester (Octoraro 22) and Philadelphia (Unami 1) will not be going to the same section conclave/area conference. But it’s kind of convenient for Baltimore and Del-Mar-Va, because Camp Horseshoe is on that side of thecouncil.

    And area NE-5–in brown, South Jersey through Philadelphia and on into central PA–looks like a prime candidate for a split.

    John,
    Interesting moves, at first glance reunites the old Area 2-J lodges (metro NYC) and avoids 360 and 412 driving through Section NE-2C to get to the rest of their current Section (NE-2A). Couple of orphan NY lodges too.
    Hmmm … I think I’ll post on how the new alignment effects the NY Lodges on my blog later today

  3. Howard Says:

    I’ve got to believe that NE-7 is going to be split into multiple sections - either that or it’s going to be a HUGE section conclave.

    NE-2B’s conclaves have been maxing out most of the available camps. I don’t think most of the old NE-2B lodges have a facility to host all of NE-7.

    I missed the following NJ lodges to NE-7
    # 2 Sakuwit ==> to NE-7
    # 9 Lenapehoking ==> to NE-7
    # 43 Woapalanne ==> to NE-7
    but these are leaving 2-C
    # 313 Owaneco ==> to NE-2
    # 427 Achewon Netopalis ==> to NE-2
    # 553 Paugassett ==> to NE-2
    Not sure how even that is. 427 is pretty small. Maybe NE-7 will be split.

  6. Andrew Kosmowski Says:

    The territory covered by NE-3 is reminiscent of the territory of the many lodges that converged at Camp Cutler for the 1995 NE3-A/B Co-conclave. The only additions are Onteroraus and the territory of the former Kamargo Lodges.

  7. Dave Scocca Says:

    I just received a forward of an email from the current NE-4C Section Adviser. The area realignment is effective July 1, and the 2008 NE-4C Conclave in mid-May at Broad Creek’s Camp Spencer will proceed as planned.

    The new Area NE-6 will be subdivided into two sections, NE-6A and NE-6B, divided by the Mason-Dixon line (using the HQ city for the councils which are on the line). All four lodges in the new NE-6A are now in NE-4C, while the five lodges in the new NE-6B are coming from both NE-4A (three lodges) and NE-4C (two lodges).

    NE-6A (south of Mason-Dixon line):
    Nentico #12 (Baltimore Area Council)
    Nentego #20 (Del-Mar-Va Council)
    Guneukitschik #317 (Mason-Dixon Council)
    Amangamek Wipit #470 (National Capital Area Council)

    NE-6B (north of Mason-Dixon line):
    Kittatinny #5 (Hawk Mountain Council)
    Susquehannock #XI (Keystone Area Council)
    Octoraro #22 (Chester County Council)
    Wunita Gokhos #39 (Pennsylvania Dutch Council)
    Tuckahoe #386 (York Adams Area Council)

    The 2009 NE-6A conclave will be at Camp Snyder with Amangamek Wipit as the service lodge–I believe this is the same as in the current NE-4C conclave rotation schedule.

    The location and service lodge for the 2009 NE-6B conclave have not yet been determined.
