Post 1801 Fund Raiser Patch

post1801.jpgJeff Cook has been trying to keep me up to date with South Carolina items lately After seeing my recent post on possible issues from lodge 185, he sent me the image of the rather unusual patch pictured. It uses the names of three South Carolina lodges but appears to be issued by an Explorer post. He couldn’t remember exactly what the patch was made for, but had seen a few floating around South Carolina the last several years.

Why was this patch made? What’s the connection between the named lodges and “Post 1801″. Jason Spangler was able to provide some answers.

Jason wrote me about this patch:

“This patch was issued by Explorer Post 1801 at the University of SC as a fundraising project. (college Scouters - mostly guys from the three lodges formed it) Basically, it was for a program called the 50/50 program that provided matching grants to young troops who needed camping equipment in each of the three councils (Pee Dee, Blue Ridge, Indian Waters). In order to raise the money the lodges agreed to let their names be used on the patch and to allow the framed editions to be sold in their council for $25 to raise the money. I believe some were auctioned off in each council at a lodge event like number 116, 185 (and we probably did a 221). I know in columbia the frames were in the council office for a while.

Nobody ever submitted it for the blue book or oaimages so far as I can tell (I know I didn’t). Maybe in this day of fakes and such it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have it on there just so people know what it is.”

What do you all think? Should this be included in the lodge listings on this site? I think there is little doubt now that it was privately issued, and not by any of the named lodges. Since it bears these lodges’ names, I think it should be listed as a “ZX” issue for each of these lodges

If the lodges agreed to let them use their names….I don’t know that I’d call it a “Fake.” After all the lodges agreed for it to be produced.

I never called it a “fake”. It’s a private issue. The Z category includes more than fakes.
