Jibshe-Wanagan 79: New Issue from Old Lodge?

79 S5?Here is an item far removed from what I usually comment on here.

I’ve been spending some time over the last few weeks cataloging some patches for a friend of mine who recently acquired a very large collection of OA items. He will be splitting them up for resale. In the collection is the flap pictured here from Jibshe-Wanagan 79. From what I can see it has neither been listed in any of the six previous editions of Blue Book nor been pictured on this site.

This lodge merged in 1975 with Nakida Naou 401 to form Nacha Tindey 25. It surprised me to find something that escaped being listed for over 32 years.

Lacking further information, I want to call this the S5 for this lodge. It is a rolled edge solid embroidered flap similar in design to the other flaps from this lodge, but with a vertically embroidered dark blue background.

Examining this lodge’s listings we can quickly eliminate all the listed flaps. The S1 has a cut edge. The S2 has a similar vertical background, but that issue does not have a lodge number on it. The S3 varieties and the S4 all have a horizontally embroidered background. This is definitely neither of the known modern fakes.

The item was in the collection of its previous owner for some time. Apparently this oddity had never previously caught the eye of anyone writing catalog listings.

What do you all think? Does anyone else own a similar flap?

Hard to tell what to do from a single patch. I’d think it should be listed as a YS (prototype) issue until another one surfaces…

    John,
You’ve got it pictured on your web site as S2b. S2a has no number. That’s the killer one. I’ve got both issues for sale on my web-site. It could be listed as a separate issue but there’s been some question in MI about why the lodge went from cut-edge (S1) with number to an issue without number and the issue exists with a number. The S2a’s are out there but significantly more uncommon.

    Regards,
    Roy
