185 X19?Atta Kulla Kulla, like Skyuka and Muscogee lodges, issued only an odd-shaped patch for this year’s Dixie Fellowship. Thanks to Greg Grimes for sending the image.

I can’t quite figure out what the whippoorwill is supposed to be doing on this patch. It looks like he’s striking a cowbell? Why the lavender and pink shirt? Maybe I’d understand the design better if I was there. Can someone fill me in on this?

    needs more cowbell.

  2. Ray Gould Says:

Taken from a Saturday Night Live sketch where Will Ferrell portrayed an original member of Blue Oyster Cult whose instrument was the cowbell. During the recording session of ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’, Will’s character was prompted by the recording director repeatedly for “more cowbell” and “needs more cowbell…..”. The director’s repeated call for “more cowbell” and Will’s character was so obnoxious in his performance that it caused discord with the rest of the band and ended in his (Will’s character) leaving the band as we know it today. Yep, Blue Oyster Cult without the cowbell never sounded the same. It’s a pretty good skit.

    Hi John-
I viewed the skit on Youtube and googled “cowbell, BOC, SNL” and noticed I get the explanation 100% right. The skit didn’t end in discord and apparently there was a cowbell added as an overdub on the original recording of ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’. Will’s character was pure fiction.

Oh… so this is what they all meant there in AKK.

  5. Mac McLean Says:

Correct - spirit theme was “more cowbell” from the SNL sketch.

This patch is part of a set with the lodge fellowship patches of 2008 …

  6. Jimmy Summers Says:

Some of the AKK contingent got up on stage before the show on Saturday night (I think) and acted out the skit. Funny stuff… Just another reason why there is nothing like Dixie!
