Lodge 331: Mystery Flap?

Posted in Klahican 331, SR-7B Lodges, Whatzit? by John E. Pannell on May 14th, 2008 at 3:02 am

I have been doing some patch identification for a friend of mine and ran across a flap from Klahican lodge that I could not identify. I have now shown the image to several North Carolina collectors but don’t yet have a conclusive answer about what this is. See the image at the top of this post. Click on it to see a much larger version of the same image. What do you think?

The flap has computer style embroidery with a dull silver mylar border and what I’ll call a “forest green” background.

The flytrap has four leaves. An 8mm fleur d’lis within the center most leaf.

Both flaps listed with SMY border and WHT fdl (S8 and S13) are three leaf flytrap varieties. Neither the S3 nor flap tentatively labeled S62? match. The previous owner put a label on the back that says “S21″, but either his skill at identifying patches was poor or he was using a different reference source.

The design of the flap most closely resembles the S25. The image to the left pictures this with an S25a.    The mystery flap is the upper one.

The size is closer to that of an S25b, which I don’t have.  However, I can’t call this border grey.

Also, the background of the mystery flap is different from the S25a.  On the S25a, the background is embroidered so that the background pattern forms neat columns.  On the mystery flap, the background is stitched in a stepwise pattern, resembling a “twill right rough” (TRR) fabric.  Though less clear, the background on the mystery flap is also significantly brighter than the S25.

It has been suggested that this could be a rebordered example of the S23 through S25 series.   Another suggestion was that this is some sort of manufacturer’s sample, never intended for distribution to the lodge.

Check your collections, please.   Has anyone seen such a piece before, or have one in their collections?   What is it?   Comment, please.

  1. John E. Pannell Says:

    This seems to be solved.

It falls under what is currently listed as S25b. On that patch the GRY border resembles a dull SMY.

The only significant difference is that the examples of the S25b that have since been shown to me all have the background stitching in neat columns. This background on this patch is stitched to resemble twill right rough (TRR).

I would like to call this S25c but that opens another can of worms. The S23 - S25 series from this lodge was in use for many years. The lodge would order relatively small quantities of the patch at one time, so there were numerous reorders. There are several minor variations of each issue that, to date, have not been deemed significant enough to catalog.
