On Vacation?
If you have been following this blog you may have noticed that things here have been quieter than normal lately. I slowed down and took a bit of a break from writing here over the last week or so. In light of my "blog vacation", and since many of us will be planning beach vacations this Summer, I thought it would be fun to highlight some OA patches with a beach theme.
Several have used some sort of beach theme. Not surprisingly most of them are in the Southeast. First up are the two sets issued by O-Shot-Caw 265 for the 2004 NOAC, S92+X31 and S93+X32. Both sets have an identical design featuring a scene on South Beach. An anthropomorphized heron, the lodge's totem, is seen cruising on the beach and taking stock of some rather attractive looking scenery.

It's Official: Another Merger in New York
It's official. Monday night Otetiana and Finger Lakes councils both voted unamimously to merge. Bill Mulrenin previously reported on his blog the impending merger of these two councils. The merger plan at this time calls for both offices and all camps to remain in operation.
As per policy and practice the two OA lodges, Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417, will also merge. Look for this to potentially happen as soon as the 2010 charter year.

Nisha Kittan Lodge Announced
It was recently announced that Kishkakon 32 and Taleka 81 will merge, following their councils' merger. The new council is the Lewis and Clark Council, bucking a BSA trend of giving councils names related to their geographic locations. Two two lodges will come together this October and form Nisha Kittan lodge.
According to the lodge's website, the lodge name means "two great rivers" in the Lenape language. Note that the lodge chooses to spell the first word of their name differently than has been used in other names previously. Nischa Nitis 410 is an example. Kittan is also a name of an active lodge.
The lodge's totem will be the black wolf. The lodge will use the number 114 which is also the number assigned to the new council by the BSA. The numbers 32 and 81 will become inactive.
A patch design contest is underway. I have been told flaps will not be available until early 2010.

"Inspired" Patches: NE-4C and Wahissa Lodge
I have written a few posts over the course of this blog about patches whose design seems to be taken or inspired by an earlier patch. I last covered a pair of inspired patches in October 2008.
After reading my recent post about Wahissa's 2009 Spring Fellowship patch, David Scocca noticed the patch looked very familiar to him and sent me a scan of the patch pictured at the top of this post. This was one of several patches using this design that was produced for the 2007 NE-4C conclave.
I think the similarities are too great to be coincidental. The Wahissa fellowship patch design is clearly a simplified version of the design used on the 2007 NE-4C conclave patch. Is this a stock design or did someone seek inspiration in this patch for the Wahissa Spring Fellowship patch?

Umpah Update
Last weekend I wrote about a patch bearing the name of Umpah lodge, the predecessor of Wagion 6, which I believe is probably a fake.
One of the details offered in support of this patch was a membership card sleeve with a rather unusual typewritten message. Several collectors have told me they believe the sleeve to be from the late 1940s - early 1950s, and certainly not from the early 1920s when Umpah lodge briefly existed. I have since made an additional discovery about this card sleeve.
Handwritten on the sleeve was a name, David R. McClay, Jr. I was curious and wanted to see if I could find anyone with that name. I wasn't to surprised when a name turned up. On a lark, I found an email address for the David R. McClay who most likely would be of the correct age to have been a Scout 55 to 60 years ago. I wrote this person and sent him an image of the card sleeve.
I was very surprised when he wrote back and confirmed that this was once his card sleeve!

Tipisa 326 recently finished their 2007-08 annual series of “Northwest Native American Items” with the Service Weekend. Apparently, they saved the best weekend patch for last. The design is that of a Chilkat blanket, complete with fringe along the edges.

New Policies on Patches Announced
This post covers an important change in policy that will soon become effective regarding patches issued for all Order of the Arrow lodges chartered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Please read the whole post carefully.
At a recent meeting at the National Headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America, it was announced that a new policy will be put in place by both the Boy Scouts of America and the NationalOrder of the Arrow Committee regarding lodge patch issues. Further announcements and clarifications will be made at this Summer's National Order of the Arrow Conference and at section conclaves throughout the year. This policy will be effective September 1, 2009.
All lodge flaps, and patches issued as multiple piece sets (most commonly two-piece sets) must be ordered through BSA Supply Division, or an official BSA licensee. The national OA and the BSA has decreed that all items must be produced in a minimum quantity of 1000 (one thousand) pieces. In the case where a lodge wishes to make minor changes in design or colors, 1000 of each must be produced.
Should the lodge feel they do not need that many pieces to suit their needs, the BSA Supply Division will purchase all remainders from the manufacturer and retain them. They will be available to the lodges should more be needed. At the BSA's discretion, they will also be made available for sale in all BSA run Scout shops.

OAImages Blog Goes "Mobile"
First, my apologies for those who may have seen some odd things on the blog this morning. I was trying to do some work on the blog's SQL database to implement the new version of the "Lightbox" plugin I'm using. All should be well now.
Yesterday, I installed yet another plugin on this blog. This creates a stripped down version of the blog for use on mobile phones and hand held devices, such as iPhones and Blackberry devices. Most of the other links and information that appear on the side bars of this blog are not shown in this layout.
There is a link at the bottom of the mobile version to exit this mobile edition and view the blog in its standard version. I may tweak with the layout and move this link to the top of the page to make exiting the mobile version easier.
And... yes, I ought to deal with, or delete, those 46 Facebook notifications.

Not For Sale
A couple of days ago Bill Mulrenin posted about a website he found in his wanderings. Like Bill, I thought this was interesting, even if we don't know what their methods are.
$timator calculates an estimate of a website's value. NYOAtrader.com was valued by this site at $1,264.
What is OAImages.com valued at? You can see after the jump.

FIFTY THOUSAND And Counting
Yesterday evening, I celebrated the start of 2009 by adding the fifty thousandth image to this site! Even with this many images there are probably still several thousand OA items that are not yet pictured here.

OAImages on the Storm
I got a new BlackBerry Storm today. It's an early Christmas present of sorts. Now I can join the group that can access this website from a smart phone. So far I am generally pleased with it.
There are a couple of issues dealing with a piece of JavaScript that doesn't work as it should on the Storm's browser, but I can redesign around that. At least I have learned this before the site becomes widely used on these devices. The site badly needs some redesign work and this could be an excuse to at least think about it.
I previously shared how this site is displayed on the iPhone. So, I now will share with readers a few screen captures from the storm.
