These 50 States: Lousisiana
Here is the next entry in the series of posts on state shaped patches, and state shapes used in patches. About a third of the states have now been covered. Previous entries may be found in the category, “These 50 States.”
I was not able to find any lodge issues strictly shaped like the state of Louisiana but there many that use the shape of this state as part of their design. This section conclave patch, for an event hosted by Ouxouiga lodge was the best I could do.
I seem to vaguely remember another, significantly older, patch in the shape of this state but have been unable to locate it on my site. I think it may have had Chilantakoba’s pelican on it. Is this familiar to anyone else?
Like the 1996 Southern Region Chief flap from Tejas 72 mentioned in earlier posts, Caddo 149 has used a map of the BSA’s Southern Region on several of their flaps. The flap pictured here just shows the Southern Region.
The region map was also used on several flaps the lodge issued for its participation in section conclaves, starting with 2000’s S47.
These are interesting to those who track section histories for these also show how the lodge’s section has changed over the past decade. Other than the S47, conclave flaps with the maps include S53, S58, S62, S66, S70, S76?, S82? and S86?.
Lastly, the lodge showed its location in the northwest corner of Lousiana on three patches issued for the lodge’s 65th anniversary: J5, N11 and X15. All three issues share a similar design.
Quelqueshoe lodge used their patches issued for the 2006 NOAC to commemorate Hurricane Rita’s landfall on the Texas and Lousiana coast. Parts of Texas, Mississippi and Alabama are also shown. The lodge’s location on a map of Louisiana is also shown on the CSP, listed as X1, issued for the 1988 NOAC>
Like other lodges in this state Comanche lodge used a map of Louisiana to show their location in the northeastern portion of the state. This idea was sued on several flaps: S42, S43, S58, S59, S64? and S65? . On the S58 and S59, the flap shape was modified so that part of flap is shaped like Lousiana’s western and southern border.
Chilantakoba lodge takes an interesting twist on current events with their S59 issued for the 2004 NOAC, held at Iowa State University. The patch, showing the shapes of both Iowa and Lousiana, pays tribute to the Iowa State Cyclones, as well as the tropical cyclones that devastated parts of their state. The same design is also incorporated as part of the lodge’s J1.
