1952 6-A PatchAfter the 1949 Area I meeting the Order of the Arrow’s areas were reorganized conform to the BSA’s   twelve areas.   This resulted in North Carolina being split between two areas.

The nine lodges in eastern and north central North Carolina formed Area 6-A.     These included 70 Tali Taktaki, 104, 117, 118, 163 Tslagi, 188, 208, 296 and 331. This grouping only last a few years as Itibapishe Iti Hollo moved to Area 6-B for the 1953 fellowships.

Two North Carolina lodges were immediately assigned to Area 6-B, which later became the Dixie Fellowship.     Tsali 134 joined this section and never looked back, being the only lodge never to rejoin its brothers in the eastern part of the state.     Catawba 459 was added to Area 6-B upon its founding.

There was one patch issued for this event.   Lodge flaps were beginning to become more popular among the lodges at this time.   The area leadership followed this trend and issued a flap for this year’s area fellowship.     This was the first of three flap shaped area fellowship patches issued by Area 6-A.

Inquisitive readers might wonder why I have jumped from the 1948 Area I meeting to the 1952 Area 6-A fellowship.   Uwharrie 208 hosted the 1949 Area I meeting but it appears that no items were issued for this event.       I thought there was a patch, but I have no record of it here.   If there was an item issued and you can supply an image, please do.

There were no area 6-A meetings in 1950 and 1951.     This was probably due to the widespread outbreaks of polio in the area during these years.

These lodges have participated in area fellowships and section conclaves every year since 1952, except for 1969 when no fellowships were held anywhere in Area 6.

This item is difficult to find in mint condition.     The white background will generally yellow or discolor with age.     Many of these patches were also worn on uniforms.
