1960 Area 6-A Fellowship
The eight lodges of Area 6-A once again met for their area fellowship in 1960. The BSA’s golden anniversary was also marked at this fellowship. Tslagi 163 was the host lodge for this conclave.
In a small way, the patch designed reverted to the Area I patches of the 1940s by using only text on the patch. To me, it looks like someone never came up with a better design and this was an easy way to have something for the event. This is now a classic conclave piece, but the design doesn’t impress me.
This was the third time a flap shaped patch was issued for a North Carolina OA. See the entries for the 1952 and 1957 area fellowship for the other two flap shaped patches. It will take some work and patience, but this patch can be found here in North Carolina.
In addition to the patch an armband was also issued, only for members of the host lodge. This rather non-descript piece only says “host”. There’s no indication on the armband as to who issued this or when it was used. As such, this is a difficult piece to acquire.
When the proofs, the figure, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.

Thanks for this great “walk through” these early pieces and the stories behind them. Very interesting and educational!
The orange twill of this patch is also found on many BSA “Golden Anniversary” issues, including the national issue set (Jubilee Camporee, Jubilee Field Day, Cub Scout Jubilee, 1960 Jamboree, Schiff, and Philmont). (It is also the background for the three Baltimore Area Council camp segments issued in 1960 for Broad Creek, Cone, and Deep Run.)
