1963 Area 6-A Fellowship
Occoneechee 104 hosted the 1963 Area 6-A fellowship at Camp Durant, just four years after they last hosted in 1959. This time around only the lodge name was used on the patch. Their thunderbird totem does not appear.
Some North Carolina collectors may not realize that this is not the same Camp Durant we know today. Then the camp was at a different location, now run by the city of Raleigh as the Durant Nature Park.
There was also a neckerchief issued for this event. It is undated and the design does not match the patch. The only hint an unknowledgeable collector that this could be from 1963 is that the camp, Durant, is named on the piece.
With a bit of foot work this patch and neckerchief can be acquired without too much difficulty. About ten years or so ago, I knew someone who acquired a large number of the pocket patches in a collection so they are out there waiting to be found. As is typical, the neckerchief will be a bit harder to find just because fewer people have bothered to collect them.

John,
The interesting aspect of the 63 memorabilia is that the neckerchiefs were misprinted “6H”. You will note that an “A” was created by using a pen to color in the top the “H”. There may be some that were printed correctly but I have never seen one.

A few years back the Occoneechee Council had its annual meeting in the Durant Nature Park, in a building that I assume had been the dining hall back when it was the Scout camp.
I’m not sure whether this came across as a nice touch or a poke in the eye to those who were fond of the old camp and regretted the sale.
