Skyuka 270 X7.3?

Skyuka 270 X7.3?

Apparently there is a common issue from Skyuka 270 that has been missed by Blue Book editors for nearly fifteen years.     I’m guilty here, too, as I had seen the patch before.   I never neither really bothered to get it as I don’t particularly collect South Carolina nor made a scan of it.       Thanks to Rick Horne for sending along this scan.

There are thre three odd-shaped patches from Skyuka lodge issued for their 50th anniversary in 1994.     X7 is in the shape of a mountain, like the lodge’s X2 and X3, but expanded to add a buttonhole and a gold mylar (GMY) border.     X7.5 in an oversized CSP issued by the lodge with a silver mylar (SMY) border.     Pictured here is a second CSP, identical to the X7.5 but with a GMY border which I have labeled “X7.3?”.

My guess is that this was missed because the descriptions for the X7 and X7.5 are so similar.     Also, the X7.5, itself, was a later addition as evidenced by its fractional number.   Past Blue Book editors probably weren’t being too careful here and just assumed both CSPs were properly listed.

In addition to inserting this second CSP, some clarification of the existing listings appears to be in order.   I propose the following listing data for this CSP and changes to the X7 and X7.5 listings.   Additions are in italics

Issue Bdr Color/Type Bkgd Name fdl/BSA Comments
X7 GMY R GRN GMY GMY fdl, buttonhole; 1944 1994 50 Years of Brotherhood
X7.3? GMY R M/C GMY GMY fdl; 1944 1994 50 Years of Service, CSP shape
X7.5 SMY R GRNM/C GMY GMY fdl; 1944 1994 50 Years of Service, CSP shape

I think this item has not been listed by the “Blue Book” because it, in my opinion, is NOT an OA issue. I think it is a CSP of the Palmetto Council - under my “looks like a duck, it must be a duck” analysis.

Other opinions may differ, but that is what it looks like to me and what I always thought it was. I thought, but am not certain, that these may have been sold in the Scout office, along with council strips, but I would be curious to know what people from that council say about this as they would know the facts better than I.
