Previously I had written about a set of prototypes that were produced during the preparation of four monochrome flaps to be issued by Occoneechee lodge.     Several days ago, the lodge took delivery of the actual order of flaps.       If I understood correctly these will be issued this Fall.     Thanks to Greg Grimes for keeping me up to date on news from this lodge.

Luckily only two sets of the prototype were produced.     The lodge and patch company each retain a set.     There is no history of “extras” of this company’s work leaking into the collectorate from east Asian sources.

The patches the lodge will issue are very close to the prototypes produced.     One needs to be very observant in order to tell these apart.     Since the prototypes are not likely to change hands with any frequency, only very few will ever have a need to be able to distinguish between the issued patches and their prototypes.

The primary difference is in the shade within the thunrderbird’s “antennae”.     The image here shows the difference in the purple monochromes.   On the prototype, the color within the “antennae” is slightly different than the flap’s background color.   On the issued flaps, the same shade was used here as in the background.   The difference is very subtle and not easy to notice.

The other three colors are similarly distinguished.

Since it is hoped more copies of the prototypes will never show up, it can be safely assumed that if you find these flaps in circulation they will not be the prototypes.   The differences should be academic except for any person lucky enough to have the chance to acquire what is presented as a prototype.

The listing data for these four flaps, to be regularly issued, are as follows:

Issue Bdr Color/Type Bkgd Name fdl/BSA Comments
S70? GRN R LGR GRN GRN fdl; interior of antennae same shade than background
S71? ORG R LOR ORG ORG fdl; interior of antennae same shade than background
S72? LPR R LVI LPR LPR fdl; interior of antennae same shade than background
S73? RED R SAM RED RED fdl; interior of antennae same shade than background
