1972 Area 6-A Conference
Croatan 117 hosted the 1972 Area 6-A Conference at Bonner Scout Reservation. This is the first time the event is referred to as an “area conference” on the patch instead of an “area fellowship”.
This was also the first time Croatan hosted the event at Camp Bonner. When the lodge previously hosted this event in 1961 and 1965 it was held at Camp Lejeune.
The central part of the pocket patch appears to be based upon the lodge’s neckerchief patch, P1. I first saw the 117 P1 at the 1993 SE-7 Conclave, shortly after moving to North Carolina. I was impressed by it then and still am today.
Following the precedent established in 1971 there was two neckerchiefs issued for this meeting. The design for these was a loose adaptation of the conference’s pocket patch.
There may have been some confusion about what to call this event. While the pocket patch calls this an area conference, the neckerchief uses the traditional name for this event, “area fellowship.” Does anyone know what the official name for this event was?
There was also a host lodge version of the neckerchief. The only change was the addition of the words “Host Lodge” above “1972 Area 6-A Fellowship”.
Neither the patch nor the (delegate) neckerchief should prove difficult for North Carolina conclave collectors to acquire. The only stumbling block might be the relative scarcity and general lack of interest in conclave neckerchiefs. I have no knowledge about the scarcity of the host lodge neckerchief.

My guess is that Fellowship being the older name was used on the Neckercheif maybe cause it would take longer to have them made so the order was place well in advance and later they changed to Conference within the time frame for a patch to be made. I would image this would happen alot and may be the reason that sometimes the two don’t like the same.
