What’s So Special Here?

Sometimes a seemingly unremarkable lot on eBay will bring a very high price.     Unknowledgeable sellers are often left scratching their heads trying to figure out what was so special about those old patches.   One such lot is currently on eBay.     At the time I am writing this (Friday evening) the bid is up to over $1200, with two days still to go on the auction.

Do you see what’s so special in here?

The big hint here is that I’m mentioning it on this blog!     Here it is:   a 398 Memphremagog R1.       I can’t be sure which R1 variety this is from the image, but the last R1b noted in my site’s price guide sold for $1000 in late 2006.     It is also the only sales data point I have for this issue.     The lone sales data point I have for the R1a is for over $600, and would appear to be unusually low.

It pays to look at low priced lots of miscellanous “Vintage Lot(s) of … Patches…”     A rare gem could be lurking there.
