I now turn to the “Bee Hive State” for this installment of the series These 50 States. We have now passed the halfway point in this series.

Scouting is very popular in Utah, thanks in part to the influence of the LDS church.   As a result, the lodges tend to be active and are known today for their numerous and attractive patches.   Yet, of the five lodges that have been headquartered in Utah only two of these lodge names have been used on patches in the shape of Utah, or using this state’s shape.

There has one patch using the name Tu-Cubin-Noonie 508 in the shape of Utah.   Even though the lodge name and number is used on this patch, Blue Book reports that this was not an official issue of this lodge.     Instead it was issued by Troop 999, whose number also appears on this patch.

This has been listed in Blue Book and on my site as the ZJ4.

According to Blue Book El-Ku-Ta 520’s first patch as their rare chenille, C1.   This patch uses a very simple, text only,   design and was made in the shape of Utah.     This is a rare issue and is rarely seen for sale or trade.

The lodge also used the shape of Utah on many of its other patches.       These include the R1-R3, S5-S7, S15-S17, X2.   Also the J1 and YJ1 from Ouray chapter prominently feature the state of Utah in their design.

I have been told the council’s Coup Trail is a JLT program that has been either run or supported by this lodge.   I’m not clear on the lodge’s involvement with this, but have shown many of this event’s patches with the lodge’s events issues.   The 1993 Coup Trail items also prominently feature Utah in their design.

As always, if you know of other patches that should be mentioned here, please let me know.
