1981 SE-3A Conclave
Tslagi 163 hosted the 1981 SE-3A conclave at Camp Cherokee. This was the last time these eight lodges would meet by themselves as an OA section. In 1982 the section would be expanded and become SE-7.
It is an interesting aside to note that this section lasted eight years1 and consisted of eight lodges. A conclave rotation system had been established so each lodge hosted the conclave once. As a result, Tslagi hosted the last SE-3A conclave, just as they hosted the last “Area 6-A Fellowship” in 1973.
The pocket patch is pictured here. The central portion of this design is loosely based upon the lodge’s 40th anniversary flap issued in 1979, listed on this site as S8.
There was also a version of the pocket patch with an incorrect lodge number, “Tslagi 161″. This error version as well as the corrected version with “Tslagi 163″ were both produced in quantity. The error is an interesting curiosity, but not especially scarce. Both patches are actively sought by collectors of Tslagi/Tsalagi collectors.
Three neckerchiefs were also issued for the conclave. All the neckerchiefs feature a silkscreened version of the conclave patch design. Two of these are considered to be lodge, not section, issues and are listed in Blue Book and on this site.
The first neckerchief, shown on the left, was available to all conclave attendees. This was produced for and issued by the section.
There was also a host lodge neckerchief. Tslagi lodge appears to have followed the precedent established by Klahican lodge in 1978 as this has been treated as lodge, not section, issue by the North Carolina Blue Book editors. It was identical except for the addition of “HOST LODGE” in black directly above the patch design. This is listed as the N1 for Tslagi 163.
Uwharrie lodge issued the first item for a section conclave, not produced by that year’s host lodge. This neckerchief, listed as N1.5, features the conclave patch design rendered in dark brown on a light brown neckerchief. The words “Uwharrie Lodge Delegate” are added above the patch design. This is the first conclave neckerchief from this section that is clearly and unquestionably a lodge issue.
Notes:
1. Technically speaking there were nine SE-3A conclaves. Even though SE-3A was created as a result of the BSA’s reorganization effective 1/1/73, these eight lodges held the final “Area 6-A Fellowship” that Spring instead of the first SE-3A Conclave.
