Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery

Not all patch designs are original. Sometimes a lodge will base a patch design on an earlier issued patch. While this is commonly done within a lodge, it should be no secret that some lodges are inspired by the work of other lodges.

Tslagi 163 Rockingham Chapter X1Hiawassee 333 X2These two patches are an early example of such inspiration. This may be a stock design, but possibly not. It should be more than obvious who the folks of Tslagi lodge were inspired by. This chapter continued to use the design in later years in Tsalagi 163, and Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70.

Tiwahe S2Sticking to lodges that are close to me here is an example of two different NOAC flaps. Even though the designs of these two patches are not that close to each other, lodge 70’s artist did say he based he design upon the earlier flap from Tiwahe.

Tso. Tso. S4 Personally, even though I’m from lodge 70, I like Tiwahe’s flap design better.

I’ll stop with just these two examples for now. There are plenty of other examples of patch designs inspiring other lodges. How many examples do you know of?

    Hi John-
I designed Gosh Wha Gono’s 4 piece flap set (BB S6,7,8,9) which served as the inspiration for Onteroraus 402’s 4 piece flap set (BB S20,21,23,24). Gosh Wha Gono’s S10 (my design….the “Chainsaw Beaver” 2 piece set…NOAC 1998) was directly inspired by Esselen’s “Hog on a Hog” 2 piece set (look at the sunglasses!). Although they look nothing alike, I can tell you personally Esselen’s set was the inspiration. Finally, I know that Gosh Wha Gono’s J-01 (aka “Merger Backpatch…designed by Donald Loomis, Jr.) was the direct inspiration for Nischa Nitis 410’s J-03 (AKA “Merger Backpatch”). As I think of others, I will share.

    Hi John-
I am told by fellow collector and friend Mike Hinman that the Adirondack #357 S-04 was inspired by the Kamargo #294 S-01 and S-02 designs.

The designer of the first two Coosa NOAC issues was an Atlanta Hawks fan.

    That’s all I’ll say.

I have no proof but Sisilija 19 put out some patches and neckers in 1975 (50th anniversary and the conclave set) that are very similiar to Woapeu Sisilija’s standard flap which is circa 1972 I think.
