1983 SE-7 Conclave Patch

The 1983 SE-7 Conclave was hosted by Uwharrie 208 at Camp Uwharrie.   This year marked the return of three lodges from western North Carolina (Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188, Catawba 459, and Eswau Huppeday 560)   for the first time in over 30 years.   Once again nearly all of North Carolina was in the same section, and would remain so until after the 1997 SR-7 Conclave.

It is interesting to note that Tsali 134 has not been in the same section as the eastern North Carolina lodges since the Area I days in the late 1940s.     Tradition being what it is, I don’t expect that to change any time soon.

The pocket patch pictured for this event is pictured at the head of this post.     The central part of this patch design is based upon a representation of the lodge’s totem as used on their F4, which was current at that time, combined with most of the lodge’s other flaps which traditionally showed the turtle’s shell.   Also shown is the participation strip that could be earned by delegates to this conclave.

There were also two neckerchiefs produced by the section for this conclave.     Both of these used the design of the conclave patch and participation strip, adapted for silkscreening on a yellow-orange neckerchief.       The first version, pictured to the left, was available to all at this conclave.

There was also a staff version of this same neckerchief.     The only difference is the addition of “Staff” beneath the design.

Eswau Huppeday lodge made a big splash at this conclave with their “Think Pink” theme.     The idea of lodge’s having a “conclave theme” was very novel to the brothers from eastern North Carolina at this time.   To some this choice of theme was a controversial, almost scandalous, act.     The lodge youth really took to this theme and produced all sorts of stuff in pink, including t-shirts, OA sashes (wash a new sash in hot water and have the red bleed), and even uniform shoulder loops.

Eswau Huppeday also produced a flap for this conclave.     This flap was eagerly sought after at the conclave and remains a popular issue of the lodge to this day.     Pink shoulder loops and a pink flap would be reused by Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge twenty-three years later when they hosted the 2006 SR-7B Conclave.

I chuckled when lodge 70’s flap appear in 2006.     It was even funnier because the lodge your were apparently unaware of what their brothers had done 23 years before them.

Eswau Huppeday lodge also issued a neckerchief for their delegates to this conclave.     They adapted the basic elements of the conclave patch design.   In keeping with their theme this design was silk screened in red on a bright pink neckerchief.     It has not been listed in Blue Book but I have tentatively labeled this piece “N4.5?”.

Nayawin Rar 296 eR1983-1

While not specifically issued for this conclave, Nayawin Rar lodge issued a patch for that year’s Spring event, called a “Conclave Shakedown”.     Notice how the Uwharrie turtle, similar to how it appears on the conclave patch, appears in the central part of this patch.

If you know of any other items produced for this conclave, please let me know.

Oops… I had forgotten to include the neckerchief Eswau Huppeday produced, to go along with the pink flap, for their delegates to this conclave. I have edited the post to include this piece, 560 “N4.5?”.
