These 50 States: Delaware and Maryland
Maryland would be an interesting, but difficult, state to use as a shape for an OA patch. To my knowledge no one has tried yet. None of the lodges with council headquarters in Maryland have even tried to use their state shape on a patch.
Only one lodge serves the state of Delaware and it's not known for innovative or unusual patches. So the list of patches using these states' shapes will be rather short.

Merry Christmas... In Patches
Many lodges traditionally hold year-end functions around Christmastime. Some of these have included a specific reference to Christmas in the event name. A small group of lodges have used a Christmas theme on their patches for events not otherwise connected to this holiday, like the S5 from Tsoiotsi Tsogalii pictured here.
First up are some event patches. Most of these are for the various lodges' "Christmas Banquet".

2008 Old Hickory Trade-O-Ree Report
Last Saturday, December 20th, I attended the 2008 Old Hickory Trade-O-Ree, sponsored by Wahissa lodge. As my collecting interests are now confined to a very specialized area, I didn't do much trading or buying, but it was a good opportunity to get out and see some friends and acquaintance that I don't get see that often. It was also a good chance to play with and show off my new Black Berry Storm.
Attendance seemed lower than I remember it in past years. Some people I would have expected to see there did not make it this year. Part of this could be due to the proximity of this event to Christmas and the poor economy. To their credit, the lodge was actively publicizing the date next year's event: December 19,2009.

These 50 States: Illinois
Illinois and its governor have been in the news a lot recently so it seemed a good state to pick the the next entry in this series.
Throughout history there have been 58 lodges different lodges charted to councils headquartered in Illinois. Most of these have long since merged or consolidated. One of the Founders of the Order of the Arrow, Carroll A. Edson, worked as a professional in Chicago which enabled the OA to become established there early on. Owasippe 7 was also created as one of the earliest lodge mergers.
The list of lodges that have issued patches in the shape of Illinois, or used that state in their patch designs is rather short.

These 50 States: West Virginia
It's been a while since I posted an entry to this series, so I thought this would be a good break from what seems to be "Wahissa Week" here.
With it's odd shaped border and two narrow panhandles, West Virginia's shape would be technically difficult to render as a patch. No lodge has yet attempted it. It could make for an interesting jacket patch if someone was to work up a nice design. A few of the state's lodges, however, did use the state shape on some of their issues.

Suanhacky Asks, "Just Where is NOAC 2009?"
Bill Mulrenin posted about this on his blog recently. I was amused by it and thought I'd share it here. Sometimes two different universities have similar sounding names, especially to those not nearby. That is the lesson learned by the brothers of Suanhacky.
Take a look at the flap recently issued by Suanhacky lodge for the upcoming 2009 NOAC. Look carefully. According to the flap, next year's conference is being held at ISU, Indiana State University. Maybe the residents of Terre Haute need to defend the high ground from an unplanned assault by several thousand Boy Scouts!
Maybe they were confused and thought NOAC was returning to Iowa State University where it was held in 1998 and 2004!

1953 Area 3B Neckerchief
In 1953, the lodges of western Pennsylvania returned to the site of the 1948 Area F meeting, Camp Twin Echo near Ligonier, PA. Anicus Lodge #67 hosted the meeting, which was held the weekend of August 28-30.
This was the only 3B meeting for which no patch was issued. There were instead at least three neckerchiefs; a yellow neckerchief with a red silk-screened design, a red neckerchief with the same design silk-screened in yellow, and a version of the yellow neckerchief with a broad red border. The unbordered neckerchiefs have pinked edges.

OAImages on the Storm
I got a new BlackBerry Storm today. It's an early Christmas present of sorts. Now I can join the group that can access this website from a smart phone. So far I am generally pleased with it.
There are a couple of issues dealing with a piece of JavaScript that doesn't work as it should on the Storm's browser, but I can redesign around that. At least I have learned this before the site becomes widely used on these devices. The site badly needs some redesign work and this could be an excuse to at least think about it.
I previously shared how this site is displayed on the iPhone. So, I now will share with readers a few screen captures from the storm.

New Server Update
Last Winter I let it be known that this site would soon require a new server. The current server is aging and nearing then end of its live... so I thought. Then in February all plans were put on hold: the server was compromised by a hacker and required a complete reinstall and then I lost my job. For personal reasons -- I'm still effectively unemployed -- I've been loathe to spend money and been hedging on buying a new server.
I think the time to buy has come at last.

Playing With Plugins
Some of you may have noticed some changes to the blog layout recently, and at least one problem that temporarily messed some things up. One of the benefits of Word Press, as blogging software, is the wide variety of plugins available to perform specialized tasks that are not part of the standard package. I've been playing with several of these lately.

OAImages on Mobile Phones
I have been looking at the new Blackberry Storm and drooling. I want one and am trying to figure out how to justify to myself spending money on a new cell phone that does all sorts of "neat things". I'm one of those folks who uses a cell phone as their primary phone, don't even have any visible or active phone jacks in my home.
But, I also am one of the few cell phone users who don't even use text messaging. I already own an iPod that still has a *lot* of space on it. I own a quite servicable laptop with wireless access. I don't travel much anymore. So, beyond the "gee whiz" factor, why do I really need a phone with a 3 megapixel digital camera, built-in MP3 player, touch sensitive keyboard, and a full web browser.
But did I tell you, I think it's really cool? ;) With that in mind, I thought I'd share with those considering a smart phone how this site looks on one. Thanks to Chris Brightwell for the screen captures from his iPhone.
