What Would You Call This?

Lodge 560: Centenntial Uniform Council Patch
Mac McLean recently sent word of an unusual patch that is being sold by Eswau Huppeday lodge. They are billing it as the Centennial Uniform Council Patch. The patch is intended to be worn as a council strip on the BSA’s new centennial uniform. Proceeds from the sale of this patch will go towards improvements at Camp Bud Shiele.

What would you call this patch? Is this an OA patch? Is it a CSP? Is it both?
Normally when a lodge issues a CSP shaped patch it gets listed as an “X” for the lodge. It is also usually listed in the various CSP guide books under that lodge’s council. This patch would appear a bit more problematic as nothing on the patch relates it to the lodge or the Order of the Arrow (OA).
However, a lodge name is not a necessary criterion for a patch to be listed as a lodge issue. Some folks even specialize in collecting “no name flaps”. Likewise, I believe could find lodge issues without anything explicit references to a lodge or even the OA on them.
However, and most importantly, this patch is clearly being issued by the lodge. The page from this lodge’s website which I linked to above makes this very clear.
So, in my opinion, when issued this patch should be listed as an odd shape patch, an “X”, for Eswau Huppeday lodge.

Walks and quacks like a csp to me…
I would call it a TGS.
I emailed Jimmy Arthurs about this. It is clearly issued by the lodge and he has the invoice to indicate the lodge purchased these emblems. The problem I see is that there is absolutely no reference to the lodge or the Order of the Arrow on the emblem.
I also spoke to Roger Ward and he indicated to me that this came up in Florida some years ago…The issuing lodge could not prove they had ordered the emblems and it was listed as a CSP.
In this case,Eswau can prove they ordered the emblem. It would have been a lot easier to say OA odd shape if it had some reference to the lodge…WWW or 560…..something.
For now, I’d have to say CSP but I reserve the right to change my mind!
You know that if the normal person picked this up in a trade they would consider it as a CSP. If the lodge had put its mark or even a certified sticker on the back I would say it is an X. Time will tell.
As just a collector, to me it’s a CPS. Who orders, pays for, and sells it is does not define what it is. It is what it is: A CPS.
Echockotee 200 (Florida) made a set of fundraiser CSPs that were purchased by the lodge, sold by te lodge and the council, but has no reference to the lodge. For that reason, they are CSPs, not because the lodge could not prove that they ordered them (Roger should have asked me, I was the one that ordered them).
So under the Rule Of Duck (with deference to swans, geese, Daffy, Donald, Daisy, AFLAC, and Chuck Berry), this would not be an OA piece.

It will (almost certainly) be catalogued as a CSP. While other CSPs with lodge names have also been catalogued as OA X issues, this one doesn’t identify a lodge and should probably not be included as an OA issue. Fund-raising notwithstanding.
