1956 Area 3B Patch

In 1956, the lodges of Area 3B in northwestern Pennsylvania met at Camp Agawam, near New Castle. The meeting was hosted by Packanke Lodge #419, which had not previously served as a host lodge.

The event emblem was a simple embroidered round patch, in white twill with a red design featuring a representation of the Indian chief who was the lodge totem.

Wow! 227 R1 Sells on eBay

Imagine you’re an occasional seller of Scout patches on eBay but have no significant knowledge how to identify items or what the various rare patches are worth.     You list your items with a $4.99 start bid.     Then you run across one that inexplicably sells for much more: $9,102.27! That’s what happened with this lot (screen shot).

The seller’s lack of knowledge about this patch could have allowed someone to get a great patch for a song.     Luckily for him he knew just enough to include the lodge and council name in the auction title and description!

As I’m behind on adding data to my price guide Bill Mulrenin scooped me on this story, too.   This is the first recorded sale I have for this classic piece of memorabilia from Illinois.

Yesterday evening, I celebrated the start of 2009 by adding the fifty thousandth image to this site! Even with this many images there are probably still several thousand OA items that are not yet pictured here.

OAImages on the Storm

BlackBerry Storm Screenshot -- Portrait

I got a new BlackBerry Storm today. It's an early Christmas present of sorts. Now I can join the group that can access this website from a smart phone. So far I am generally pleased with it.

There are a couple of issues dealing with a piece of JavaScript that doesn't work as it should on the Storm's browser, but I can redesign around that. At least I have learned this before the site becomes widely used on these devices. The site badly needs some redesign work and this could be an excuse to at least think about it.

I previously shared how this site is displayed on the iPhone. So, I now will share with readers a few screen captures from the storm.

All pages can be accessed directly from the links in the above list. One can also access them from the "National & Special Events Issues" on this site's home page. Read the Full Post

New Server Update

Last Winter I let it be known that this site would soon require a new server. The current server is aging and nearing then end of its live... so I thought. Then in February all plans were put on hold: the server was compromised by a hacker and required a complete reinstall and then I lost my job. For personal reasons -- I'm still effectively unemployed -- I've been loathe to spend money and been hedging on buying a new server.

I think the time to buy has come at last.

Playing With Plugins

Some of you may have noticed some changes to the blog layout recently, and at least one problem that temporarily messed some things up. One of the benefits of Word Press, as blogging software, is the wide variety of plugins available to perform specialized tasks that are not part of the standard package. I've been playing with several of these lately.

After the jump is a list of the recent plugins I've added and what they're designed to do.

OAImages on Mobile Phones

iPhone Screenshot -- Portrait

I have been looking at the new Blackberry Storm and drooling. I want one and am trying to figure out how to justify to myself spending money on a new cell phone that does all sorts of "neat things". I'm one of those folks who uses a cell phone as their primary phone, don't even have any visible or active phone jacks in my home.

But, I also am one of the few cell phone users who don't even use text messaging. I already own an iPod that still has a *lot* of space on it. I own a quite servicable laptop with wireless access. I don't travel much anymore. So, beyond the "gee whiz" factor, why do I really need a phone with a 3 megapixel digital camera, built-in MP3 player, touch sensitive keyboard, and a full web browser.

But did I tell you, I think it's really cool? ;) With that in mind, I thought I'd share with those considering a smart phone how this site looks on one. Thanks to Chris Brightwell for the screen captures from his iPhone.
