Illinois and its governor have been in the news a lot recently so it seemed a good state to pick the the next entry in this series.

Throughout history there have been 58 lodges different lodges charted to councils headquartered in Illinois.   Most of these have long since merged or consolidated.   One of the Founders of the Order of the Arrow, Carroll A. Edson, worked as a professional in Chicago which enabled the OA to become established there early on.   Owasippe 7 was also created as one of the earliest lodge mergers.

The list of lodges that have issued patches in the shape of Illinois, or used that state in their patch designs is rather short.

The events patches issued by Wenasa Quenhotan 23 in 2001 are a “puzzle patch” set in the shape of Illinois.     Individually, each event patch appears as a randomly shaped patch. These are listed on this site and Blue Book as eX2001-1 through eX2001-4.     Looking at the image of these pieces on the site, and pictured at the top of this post, it would appear the set was manufactured as one piece and then cut apart by the lodge as needed.

In 1953 Inali 38 celebrated their 25th anniversary.     They issued   a patch for this occasion in the shape of Illinois.     This is listed as their X4.   This patch also shows the county this lodge and its council served in western Illinois.

Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan 40 X3

Ma-Ka-Ja-Wan 40 issued an attractive patch for the DesPlaines River Tecumseh Trail.     This is listed on the site as X3.

The neckerchief listed as the N2 for Natokiokan 41 is a rather simply designed item, incorporating the shape of Illinois, that doesn’t name the lodge on it.   The only indication that this is an OA is the arrow.   At the end of the arrow is a red dot that shows the approximate location of headquarters for this lodge’s council.

Illinek 132 also used the shape of Illinois on their eX1989, issued for the lodge’s 1989 Winter Dinner.

Waupecan 197 S38+X7

Waupecan 197 S38+X7

The last Illinois lodge on this list is Waupecan 197.   This lodge issued two sets for the 2000 NOAC, listed as   S37+X6, S38+X7.     The shape of Illinois is used in both flaps in these sets.   This lodge is attached to Rainbow Council, explaining the use of the rainbow in both sets.   The star indicates the location of the council’s headquarters.

The shapes of both Illinois and Indiana appear on the X4 issued by Michigamea 110 for the 2000 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC).

NOAC has been held several times at the University of Illinois.     It is possible this state’s shape has been used on various NOAC patches from other lodges.     If you know of a patch that should be on this list, please let me know.
