New Founders’ Day Policy Announced

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on April 2nd, 2009 at 2:58 pm

An important change was announced yesterday on arrow-l, an Order of the Arrow listserv, regarding the preparation and serving of food at this Summer’s National Order of the Arrow Conference. Given the date of the announcement this was widely accepted as a hoax or April Fool’s Day joke. It was not.

Lodges will not be allowed to prepare and serve food at NOAC. Open beverages will not be allowed. Only commercially prepared pre-packaged foods may be distributed by the lodges. The official word is:

Due to the increased awareness and concern for the restrictions and regulations governing the delivery and preparation of food for public consumption, the conference management has elected to not allow lodges and individual participants to deliver and prepare foods to the 2009 National Order of the Arrow Conference. As an alternative, lodges will be able to distribute commercially prepared and prepackaged food products that do not require refrigeration or preparation. In addition, open container beverages will not be allowed to be served.

This can be verified on page 4 of this medical information document posted on the OA’s official website.

Mike Bazonis reported on arrow-l that this information was included in the 4/1/09 “News You Can Use” email. However, at the time of the writing of this post, this information was not yet posted on the NOAC – News You Can Use page on the NOAC Event Registration website.

Be aware, this change is official. It is not an April Fool’s Day joke. If you were preparing to serve food at NOAC you must now make sure your plans comply with this policy decision.

I strongly encourage those who are in leadership position in lodges or are planing to attend NOAC to subscribe to the National Events Information Email List. This will ensure you receive the “News You Can Use” updates in a timely manner. Those who did subscribe to this list probably would not have believed this announcement to be a joke.

I respectfully encourage those who announce such changes to take note at how this was initially received by the online community.   Most did not believe it. Some of those even tried to verify the information, and their inability to do so combined with the date of the announcement encouraged the belief that this was a prank.
